NCCU Concludes Duke Invite With 3-0 Loss To Delaware

DURHAM, N.C. -North Carolina Central concluded its debut at the Duke Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening with a 3-0 loss to the University of Delaware at Cameron Indoor Stadium as the Eagles fell to the Blue Hens by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-12.

Senior outside hitter Belinda Behncke-Biney was named to the Duke Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team for her outstanding performance over the weekend on both offense and defense, marking her second of the season. She capped off the weekend with a team-high five kills, one assist and seven digs against the Blue Hens.

Behncke-Biney finished the two-day event with 24 kills on 83 attempts, averaging 2.67 kills per set. She also had 14 digs, two assists, two aces and two blocks, while averaging 3.00 points per set.

Host Cleveland State Defeats Morgan State, 3-0

CLEVELAND, Ohio-Morgan State fell to host Cleveland State, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-15) Saturday afternoon in the CSU Invitational at Woodling Gym. The loss was the Lady Bears' second of the tournament and extended Morgan State's losing skid to eight straight.

Amy Benz and Marie Frease led the Vikings, who are off to a school-record best 8-0 start, with 10 kills apiece. Annie Djukic finished with 34 assists and Amy Grabiec totaled a match-high 18 digs.

Erin Cox led Morgan State (1-8) with seven kills ad had 11 digs, while Dominique Bozier added six kills. Dina Beamon led the Lady Bears with 17 digs, while Ashley Johnson contributed a career-best 13 digs.

Coastal Carolina Easily Handles NSU, 3-0

CONWAY, S.C. - Competing at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, the Norfolk State volleyball team was no match for the host Chanticleers in a 3-0 loss Saturday afternoon at Kimbel Arena.

Coastal Carolina earned the sweep by winning 25-12, 25-14, 25-18. The loss dropped NSU's record to 3-7 on the year, while the Chanticleers improved to 4-5.

Freshman Arielle Knafel had five kills to lead the Spartan offense, while freshman Noelle Eagles totaled seven digs. After missing the last three games of the season, junior Nicole Kessner split time at setter with sophomore Kristen Burt. Both players added eight assists on the day.

Erika Lightsey added nine kills to lead Coastal Carolina. Chelsy Kimes and Lindsay Gill had 12 and 11 digs, respectively, while Lauren Alejo and Kelsie Mauck split time at setter. Alejo added 19 assists and Mauck totaled 12.

The Chanticleers played solid on offense, hitting an incredible .406 for the afternoon with just eight attack errors. Coastal Carolina limited NSU to a -.068 clip and held advantages in service aces (7-2) and blocks (5-2).


The Citadel Completes Weekend Sweep of Spartans, 3-0

CONWAY, S.C. - A strong offensive attack propelled The Citadel over the Norfolk State volleyball team, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Kimbel Arena.

The Bulldogs hit .391 for the match in winning 25-11, 25-15, 25-17. The loss dropped NSU to 3-8 on the season, while The Citadel improved its record to 3-8.

For the Spartans, sophomore Charlotte Armstead totaled seven kills to lead the offense. Freshman Noelle Eagles added 11 digs, while redshirt sophomore Paige Gary-Canty contributed seven digs and all three of NSU's service aces. Sophomore Kristen Burt had 16 assists.

Eagles was one of six players among the four teams named to the All-Tournament Team.

UMES Sweeps New Hampshire In Final Match At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Kaveingna Lea'Aetoa had a game-high-tying nine kills as Maryland Eastern Shore swept New Hampshire, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18), in its final match of the Art Carmichael URI Volleyball Invitational at Keaney Gym Saturday.

With the win, UMES (3-7), grabbed its first winning streak of the season after topping Marist, 3-2, Friday. UNH fell in 3-7 in the loss.

UMES outhit the Wildcats .200-.118, including holding them to .059 and .037 percentages, in the first and third games, respectively.

The Hawks also got seven kills apiece from freshman Maline Vaitai , redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura and junior Zoe Bowens.

B-CU Volleyball Defeated by Miami, San Francisco

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The LadyCats of Bethune-Cookman volleyball came away with an 0-2 record on Saturday at the Hurricane Invitational, taking losses to Miami and San Francisco.

B-CU opened Saturday morning with their toughest opponent of the tournament, the Hurricanes of Miami. The LadyCats made their best performance of the match to open up, falling 25-17 with a .128 hitting percentage, but Miami's athleticism got the best of them, as each set was tougher than the last. UM defeated B-CU 25-12 in the second, and rolled the LadyCats 25-8 to give B-CU the 3-0 loss.

Janeen Davis topped the offensive chart for B-CU, collecting eight kills. Jessica Wilson returned to the lineup after a six-game hiatus due to illness, recording six kills in the loss. Alexis Bliese tallied 17 assists, while Jacqueline Woodyear led defensively with 12 digs.

Returning for the late game, B-CU took on San Francisco, which appeared to be a more even matchup for the 'Cats. B-CU opened up a bit shaky in the first set, falling 25-14, but recovered a bit in the second and third. However, SF topped the LadyCats in each, 25-19 and 25-17, taking the 3-0 victory.

The LadyCats attacked from multiple angles, but were unable to find consistency on offense. Krysta Gardner played a greater role in Saturday's game two, leading the team with 5 kills, followed by Jessica Wilson with 4. Alexis Bliese notched 14 assists, while Jacqueline Woodyear came up with 10 digs.

Eagles Conclude Play at Providence Friar Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Coppin State wrapped up play in the Providence Friar Classic with matches against Providence and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday in Mullaney Gymnasium.

The Eagles lost to Providence 25-21, 25-19 25-14 in their first match of the day and then concluded the tournament with a 25-22, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19 loss to St. Francis (N.Y.).

Ashley Saunders had 13 kills and 14 digs in the match versus Providence, while Alexandria Malesick added a career-best 10 kills.

Tyler Phillips also reached double figures in digs with 10 and freshman Haley Beechler had 28 assists in leading the offense.

In its final match of the tournament, Coppin State was paced by Saunders, Vanity Massey and Yolanda Reid.

Saunders led the way with a season-best 17 kills and a season-best 21 digs, while Massey and Reid each recorded a career-best 13 kills.

Phillips led the Coppin State defensive effort as she had a career-high 22 digs.

Beechler notched a pair of career highs with 42 assists and 12 digs.
