Bethune-Cookman Advances to MEAC Softball Championship

ORMOND BEACH, Fla., May 14, 2010 -- Bethune-Cookman junior Allison Garcia hit a two-run RBI double to center field to lead the Wildcats to a 3-0 win over North Carolina A&T in the semifinal game of the 2010 MEAC Softball Championship tournament played at the Sports Complex.

The win advances the Wildcats to Saturday's championship game at 1 p.m. The Aggies will have another chance to advance to the championship round. They play again at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will be the Wildcats' opponent on Saturday.

Garcia helped herself on the mound as well. She pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out five to improve to 23-14 on the season. North Carolina A&T starter Jennifer Luper (16-14) found herself in more trouble in the Wildcats' fourth.

After Joanna Hernandez singled, the Aggies recorded two outs. But walks to Ashton Hinds and Aurelia Gamch loaded the bases for the Wildcats with two outs. The Aggies turned to reliever Sasha Philpot, but Philpot walked Garcia on six pitches to force in a run.

Garcia finished the game with three RBIs. Gamch and Michelle Banuelos-Smith had two hits apiece.
