Softball

Interview With Coach Wiggins, Florida A&M

Q: Coach who do you consider the leaders on your team?

A: My seniors Amanda Reyes, Melissa Oliphant, and Joyce Harold. They're the heart beat of our team.

Q: Coach, MEAC Preseason Player of the Year Amanda Reyes has been a key player for your team, how has she handled her senior year so far?

A: We have had challenges and challenges make you grow. I hope when we get to conference play the challenges pay off for her because experience is the best teacher.

Q: You have six freshmen and four sophomores on the team. How have the underclassmen performed so far this year?

A: They stepped up and I think they will continue to step up. As my upperclassmen represent their classification it is about leadership. As they lead the underclassmen will fall in line.

Q: After a hard fought MEAC series with Bethune-Cookman what adjustments is your team making for the final stretch of the regular season and into the MEAC tournament?

A: You're right it was but they're all pretty hard fought because the MEAC is so competitive and that is what you want. We're just going to work on offense and defense as a team because it takes a team to be successful.

Q: Coach what were your goals this year?

A: Winning the MEAC and getting to the second round of the NCAA where we have not gotten yet. The goals are set high but reachable and attainable.

Q: Was there a target on your back?

A: Of course. It takes a lot of work to keep it to because every other opponent wants the same thing so they are coming at you twice as hard.

Q: How do you work through that coach?

A: Simply preparing the young ladies. Getting confidence mentally, physically, and skill wise. Then you just trust yourself at that point.

Baseball

Interview with Coach Melendez, Bethune-Cookman

Q: Coach who has been your biggest surprise for you this year so far?

A: I would have to say Peter O'Brien our catcher. Not a surprise that he has played well but that he has put up such great numbers so far this year. He has school record 16 homeruns and among nation's best in that category.

Q: Do you feel there is a target on your back?

A: Well we've been fortunate to have won the MEAC nine out of the ten years I've been coaching here. Every year we have a target and we should embrace that and make sure when we show up to the field there are some expectations out of this team.

Q: Coach, how does a tough non-conference schedule get you ready for MEAC play?

A: As we all know our conference teams are getting better every year. I need to challenge our team against top caliber teams to get us ready for the tough MEAC season. It is something we do on purpose.

Q: Ali Simpson was lat year's MEAC Rookie of the Year, how has he done in his sophomore campaign so far?

A: He has done well. Ali is our number one pitcher and last year he was our number three. He could hide last year behind number one and two but this year he is the man and he has embraced it. He has done very well and leads the team in wins.

Q: Coach, do you see any of your player's names getting called in the draft?

A: We do have a couple. One is Juan Perez, he is our second baseman and right-handed pitcher. He has been looked at as a right-handed pitcher. We also have Ryan Durrence our first baseman, DJ Leonard our left fielder, and Matt Wright our right fielder. All of those players will have a chance this year or next year to play professional ball.
