After an emotionally draining victory over Vanderbilt, Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team took on second-seeded Arkansas State for the right to stay in the winner's bracket. The Hawks weren't themselves early, falling 2-0 before evening the series at two all. Arkansas State would go onto win games three and four against the Hawks, who didn't capitalize on the Red Wolves' mistakes.
In a rematch of the 2008 second-round match, the Red Wolves reversed their fate, this time upending the nation's top team 4-2. They took game one 223-190 and game two 217-179.
UMES rebounded in games three and four, getting key strikes from Anggie Ramirez and Kristina Frahm. They would take those games 203-199 and 216-207.
Games five and six were a different story however. Maria Rodriguez and Paula Vilas were both slightly off. Splits and opens dotted the UMES scorecard. In game six the Red Wolves left two frames open, including the first, but the Hawks couldn't walk through the door Arkansas State left open and left three open of their own. They would fall in games five and six 211-186 and 197-165.
"To their credit, Arkansas State bowled well," said head coach Sharon Brummell. "I think we stopped marking at times, leaving some tough splits. That hurts because you have nothing to build off of. We will get it turned around this afternoon."
The Hawks take on New Jersey City, the fourth seed at 3:30 p.m. A loss by either team will eliminate them from the tournament while a win places them in a match at 5:30 p.m. against Fairleigh Dickinson.
UMES is 3-1 against the Gothic Knight of NJCU this season, with the lone loss coming yesterday in the seeding round.
