NORFOLK, Va. - Jeannette Sauceda was 3-for-4 with a home run and five runs and Sara Spanka went 4-for-6 with two runs and a stolen base to lead Norfolk State over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon, 15-4 and 8-0, at NSU Softball Field.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Lady Hawks were outhit, 17-6. Sophomore Britney McLeod (Palmyra, N.J.) led off the game with a single to left field and advanced to second on an illegal pitch by Casey Pomeroy. Junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) then walked before McLeod advanced to third on another illegal pitch by Pomeroy.
Logan stole second and advanced to third after a fielder's choice on freshman Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.). McLeod was out at home on the play. Logan scored the first run of the game after a single to center by senior Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md.).
The Spartans scored 13 runs before UMES sophomore Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) scored a run in the top of the fourth inning to bring the score to 13-2.
NSU responded by scoring another two runs before the Lady Hawks scored two in the top of the fifth inning. The half started with two straight walks for UMES by senior Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) and
James. Scott then singled to right and scored James. With the second hit of the inning, junior Miura Lugg (Nashville, N.C.) singled to the pitcher and scored Johnson.
The Lady Hawk stranded three runners to end the game, 15-4. Freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) received the loss for UMES, moving to 1-5 on the season while Elizabeth Castaneda earned the win for the Spartans to move to 1-1.
James was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and run scored.
The scoring for the Lady Hawks would not continue into the second game of the day as NSU's Alyssa Velazquez had a spectacular game, going five innings strong, giving up two hits, no runs and striking out seven while walking none.
Johnson collected her second hit of the afternoon in the second inning with a single to left field. Logan received her first hit of the day in the third with a single to the short stop.
The Spartans collected at least one run in every inning to go on and win, 8-0.
Velazquez earned her third victory of the season while Hahn moved to 0-2. UMES falls to 1-12 and NSU improves to 5-14 with the doubleheader.
