The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed day one of the 2010 MEAC Tennis Championships today at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Howard Lady Bison, who earned the top seed in the northern division, topped No. 4 North Carolina A&T 4-0. The Lady Pirates won the doubles point 8-2 and 8-5. In singles action, the Lady Bison advanced with wins at the number two, three and six positions to gain the victory.
The No. 3 southern division seed, Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats defeated Hampton, the second seed in the northern division, 4-1. The Lady Wildcats won the doubles point and won the number three, four and six individual spots to advance to tomorrow's semifinal against the reigning MEAC champion South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs.
Florida A&M topped Delaware State 4-0 and will face Howard in the second semifinal game also beginning tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. The Lady Rattlers were up 1-0 after the doubles point and captured the number one, five and six singles positions to advance.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Morgan State, 4-0, to advance to tomorrow's semifinal at 8:30 a.m. After capturing the doubles point, SCSU captured the number three, five and six singles spots.
On the men's side, No. 1 Hampton defeated No. 4 Norfolk State, 4-1. The Pirates lead 1-0 after winning the doubles point and notched wins at the number four-six singles spots to advance. The Pirates will face off against the defending MEAC Champion South Carolina State Bulldogs tomorrow at noon.
In the second men's quarterfinal, Howard survived Bethune-Cookman, 4-3, to advance to tomorrow's semifinal. Bethune-Cookman started things off by taking the doubles point to lead 1-0. In singles action, the Howard Bison came back and tied the Wildcats at three-all with wins at the number two, three, and four spots. In the deciding game at the number one singles position, Omar Haloui outlasted Marc Misanovic in three sets for the win 6-7, 7-5, 6-1. With the win, the Bison advanced to tomorrow's semifinal against the Florida A&M at noon.
South Carolina State defeated Morgan State 4-0. The Bulldogs won on the doubles point 8-1 and 8-5 and earned wins at the number two, three and five singles positions to move on to tomorrow's semifinal.
Florida A&M, the top seed in the southern division swept Delaware State 4-0. The Rattlers dominated the Hornets and captured wins in doubles and the number one, five and six positions.
Tennis action continues tomorrow with semifinal play beginning 8:30 a.m. for the women and noon for the men. The championships conclude on Sunday, April 18 beginning at 9 a.m. with the women's championship final followed by the men's championship finale at 11:30 a.m. The championships are free and open to the public.
