MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY SOFTBALL HONORS

 

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., April 12, 2010 - North Carolina A&T's Jessie Larson earned MEAC Softball Player of the Week honors, the conference announced today.  Bethune-Cookman's Aurelia Gamch was named Rookie of the Week.  Delaware State's Andrea Waters and Florida A&M's Amanda Reyes earned Co-Pitcher of the Week accolades respectively. 

Larson (C, 5-11, Sr., Morrison, Colo.) hit three home runs, one double with seven RBI and four runs scored to lead the Lady Aggies to a 4-1 record in non-conference play last week.  Larson belted a two-run homer against Winston-Salem State in the first game of a three-game home stand to lead the Lady Aggies to a 2-0 victory.  She followed with a three-run home run in the final game as N.C. A&T collected the 5-0 win.   She also tallied 28 putouts and five assists for the week.

Gamch (SS, 5-2, Fr., Madera, Calif.) hit .364 from the plate as she helped the Lady Wildcats to a 2-1 conference mark against South Carolina State. She finished 4-for-11 with three doubles, three runs and four RBI. The shortstop also recorded two putouts and nine assists.

Reyes (P, 5-2, Sr., Scotts Valley, Calif.) earned a pair of wins against Norfolk State and recorded a ERA of 0.000 in 10.2 innings last week.  She allowed just four hits, no earned runs, and struck out 15 of the 45 batters faced.

Waters (P, 5-7, Jr., Eagle River, Alaska) posted an ERA of 0.000 with a win over La Salle and two over Maryland E. Shore last week.  She gave up 10 hits in 17 innings and allowed two walks, no earned runs and struck out four.

Other Top Performers:

 

Rachel Carroll (DSU) hit 6-for-13 from the plate with a .461 batting average to help the Lady Hornets finish 4-1 last week.

Jasmin Donaldson (FAMU) hit .500 for the Lady Rattlers with one double, six runs and two RBI. 

Allie Garcia (B-CU) went 2-1 including a shutout and posted an ERA of 1.40 against South Carolina State.

Corrine Gordon (FAMU) hit .363 from the plate with one double, one run and two RBI in three games against Norfolk State.

Ashton Hinds (B-CU) finished with a .538 batting performance with one home run, one double and four RBI to help the Lady Wildcats pick up two of three wins against South Carolina State.

Emily Johnson (How) struck out a season high 10 batters in a loss to Coppin State and finished the week with 25 strikeouts.

Sasha Philpot (NCAT) pitched back-to-back shutouts against Winston-Salem State and finished with a 0.67 ERA in 21 innings pitched.

Jeanette Sauceda (NSU) led the Spartans with a .467 batting average in five games.

Christine Sborz (How) went 5-for-7 with four runs, two doubles, one home run and two RBI in a pair of conference wins over Coppin State.
