VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., March 30 - Bethune-Cookman catcher Sabrina Ferguson earned MEAC Softball Player of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday. B-CU teammate Aurelia Gamch was named Rookie of the Week and Howard's Carly Martin earned Pitcher of the Week accolades, respectively.
Ferguson (C, 5-3, So., Oxnard, Calif.) earned a hit in every game, while averaging .733 from the plate with seven RBI, including two doubles and one home run, to help the Lady Wildcats to a 2-2 record in non-conference play last week. The sophomore was perfect (4-4) from the plate in the second game of a doubleheader against Cornell with four RBI. She finished the week hitting 11-of-15 with three runs. Defensively she recorded 17 putouts and four assists with no errors.
Gamch (SS, 5-2, Fr., Madera, Calif.) averaged .455 from the plate with three RBI, including one-home run and one double. The home run against Cornell helped the Lady Wildcats to a 9-6 non-conference win. Gamch also tallied eight assists and two putouts at the shortstop position.
Martin (P, 5-5, Jr., Hanover, Md.) finished 1-1 last week with a 3.60 ERA including a win over Maryland Eastern Shore. She pitched a combined eight innings striking out eight of the 36 batters faced. Martin recorded a 0.00 ERA against UMES, striking out four and allowing just one hit, one walk and no earned runs.
Other Top Performers:
Breanne Parr (DSU) recorded five RBI, two home runs and two doubles while hitting .500 from the plate to help the Lady Hornets to a 4-1 non-conference finish last week.
Nicole Saez (How) hit a grand slam in a win over UMES and finished the game hitting .750 from the plate with seven RBI on four batting attempts.
