North Carolina A&T Advances in WNIT With Win Over Wake Forest

The North Carolina A&T scored the first 11 points of the game on Thursday and went on to blow out Wake Forest 73-49 in the first round of the WNIT at Reynolds Gymnasium. Jaleesa Sams, Amber Calvin and Ta'Wuana Cook led the Aggies with 19 points apiece.

It was the first postseason win in a national tournament for the Lady Aggies program. It was the third time a MEAC team has won a postseason game, following in the footsteps of Coppin State's win over St. Joseph's in the 2006 WNIT and South Carolina State's win over LaSalle in the 1983 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.

"Our kids brought a lot of energy tonight,'' said Bibbs. "We felt like by being in postseason play we gave our four seniors another chance to go out the right way. When we started the season they were hungry. But sometimes you have to get re-focused. And losing in the MEAC Tournament got us re-focused."

N.C. A&T came into the first round game after having an eight-day layoff following an upset loss to S.C. State in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament in Winston-Salem. The Aggies entered the MEAC tournament as the No. 1 seed. They came into the WNIT as an underdog playing against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

But there was an early indication it was going to be a good night for N.C. A&T in the city of Winston-Salem this time. Calvin hit two free throws on a technical foul on the Demon Deacons bench before the ball was even tipped. Calvin didn't stop there. She hit back-to-back threes to give the Aggies an 11-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. Wake Forest scored the next five points before the Aggies went on a 13-5 run that ended with another Calvin three that gave the Aggies a 24-10 lead with 11:32 remaining in the first half.

The closest Wake Forest got the rest of the way was 13 points. The Demon Deacons' season comes to an end at 18-14. They were led by Brittany Waters' 13 points. The Aggies improved to 22-10. They will play Charlotte in round 2 on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Charlotte.
