North Carolina A&T will see its season continue in the Women's National Invitational Tournament 7 p.m., Thursday, March 18 against Wake Forest University at Reynolds Gymnasium on the campus of Wake Forest.
North Carolina A&T (21-10) earned the WNIT bid as an automatic qualifier after winning the MEAC regular-season championship for the third straight season. Thursday's game will mark the third straight season the Lady Aggies have participated in postseason play.
In 2008, the Lady Aggies earned an automatic bid to the WNIT where they lost at South Carolina. Last season, the Lady Aggies earned the highest seed of any historically black college or university (men or women) in history when they earned a No. 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They eventually lost to ACC regular-season champion Florida State 83-71 in the first round.
The Demon Deacons come into the game 17-14. Like N.C. A&T, the Demon Deacons were eliminated in their conference tournament's quarterfinals. Wake Forest and North Carolina A&T will meet for the first time since 2004 when the Demon Deacons defeated the Lady Aggies 92-43 in Winston-Salem.
If the Lady Aggies are able to defeat the Demon Deacons, they will play the winner of Thursday's Gardner-Webb at Charlotte contest. The location of the second round game will be announced after the first round contests.
This is the first year of the expanded Postseason WNIT 64-team field, and the field includes 31 teams that earned automatic berths and 33 teams that earned at-large berths.
The WNIT kicks off postseason action Wednesday with first-round games. All games are held on the campuses of participating schools. All 64 teams will play in the first round, featuring 32 games. That will be followed by 16 games in Round 2, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games, and the championship. The WNIT championship game will be played Saturday, April 3, and will be hosted by one of the two final participating schools.
