Hampton University Director of Athletics, Lonza Hardy, Jr. has announced that women's basketball interim head coach David Six has signed a three year contract with the University.
"Coach Six and his staff did a superb job of methodically improving our women's basketball team game-by-game. As a result of those efforts, in consultation with the Administration, I was pleased to present to Coach Six a three-year contract, which he has agreed to," said Hardy. "Even with the improvements that we have seen thus far, I'm confident that with Coach Six at the helm, the best is yet to come."
Six, who took over the program in early April on an interim basis following the dismissal of Walter Mebane, guided the Lady Pirates to their first MEAC Tournament Championship title since 2004. Six also guided the Lady Pirates to their first 20 win season since the 2002-03 season when the Lady Pirates won 23 games.
Six came to Hampton after leaving Hampton High School, where he won two state and nine regional championships.
"I am excited about being here at Hampton University", said Six. "I think that it is a perfect fit me and this is where I want to be."
Coach Six will now guide the Lady Pirates into their first NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament game on Saturday, March 20 at 2:30 pm when the Lady Pirates face off against Duke University in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Durham, NC.
"Coach Six has done an exemplary job in a short time here at Hampton University," said HU President Dr. William R. Harvey." "I expect him to be the Lady Pirates Basketball Coach for many, many years in the future as he takes us to new heights."
