McBride Posts Sixth Double-Double But N.C. A&T Tops UMES, 76-46

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior April McBride notched her six double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds but North Carolina A&T's Lamona Smalley was three assists shy of a triple-double as The Lady Aggies topped the Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 76-46, at the Corbett Sports Center Monday.

Smalley tallied 18 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to help N.C. A&T stay perfect in MEAC play at 10-0 and improve to 16-7 overall. T'Wuana Cook also had 22 points on 4-of-8 from 3-point range, five boards and four steals.

UMES, which got 13 rebounds from junior Chena Parker, fell to 8-12 (5-5 MEAC) with the loss.

North Carolina A&T jumped out to a 9-1 lead on a 3-point play by JaQuayla Berry at the 15:16 mark Cook then hit consecutive 3-pointers to grow the Lady Aggies lead to 20-7 at 8:45. After a pair of Jaleesa Sams, Cook knocked down her third three of the half to make it a 25-9 game. At 7:22.

Down, 30-11, with just over six minutes left in half, UMES scored eight straight points to cut the margin 11 with 4:21 left. Amber Cook started the run with a layup off an assist by Casey Morton and Parker and McBride hit back-to-back threes to pull within 30-19, the Lady Hawks' never got closer than that the rest of the day. NCAT led by a 37-24 margin at the half.

North Carolina A&T's Cook and McBride each had 14 to lead their teams while McBride and Parker had seven boards apiece for UMES.

Lady Bulldogs Pick Up Second League Win Over Howard 74-67

ORANGEBURG, SC-Senior Sophilia Hipps scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, while junior Whitney Whiley tossed in 15 as South Carolina State picked up their second league victory 74-67 over the Lady Bison Monday at S-H-M.

Howard was led by Zykia Brown who scored a game-high 26, while Saadia Doyle chipped in 22 points in the loss.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 11 point lead, 23-12 off a 3-pointer by freshman guard Tiara Knox at the 9:46 mark. A layup by Saadia Doyle with 1:54 left in the first half cut SC State's lead to four, 32-28.

SC State closed the first half with a 34-30 advantage. The Lady Bulldogs shot 5-9 (55.6%) from 3-point range in the first-half.

South Carolina State sparked a 19-5 run off a layup by junior Joi Walker to take a commanding 18 point lead, 53-35 at the 12:20 mark.  A 3-pointer by Lauren Johnson followed by a layup by Zykia Brown cut the lead to five, 65-60 with 3:38 left in the game.

Howard's Tamoria Holmes hit a driving layup with 1:10 left to pull the Lady Bison with three, 70-67. Freshman forward Tiana Hemphill's layup with 0:56 seconds left sealed the 74-67 victory for the Lady Bulldogs.

Lady Pirates Run Over Lady Rams

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Hampton stretched its winning streak to six against the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State, coming away with a 67-26 win at the Clarence E. Gaines Center on Monday night.

The Lady Pirates (12-10, 7-3 MEAC), dominated the game on both sides of the ball. Hampton went on a 29-0 run in the second half which ended with a lay-up by Breanna Jones at the 7:44 mark; at that mark they were up 60-10.

The Lady Pirates shot 45.5 percent from the 3-point line and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line in the second half.

In the first half, the Lady Pirates forced 16 turnovers and made 12 points off the Lady Rams' mistakes. Melanie Warner layup at the 19:34 mark of the first half started a 25-5 run for the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Pirates were led in points by reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week Quanneisha Perry and Jericka Jenkins with 12 points apiece. Off the bench, Choicetta McMillian had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Spartan Women Fall 57-44 to Delaware State

NORFOLK, Va. - Selena Galloway and Alexis Abraham each had 11 points to lead the Delaware State women's basketball team to a 57-44 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Hall.

The game got off to very a slow start. NSU (3-16, 0-10 MEAC) took an 8-3 lead after a jumper by Raychele Payne with 13:08 left in the first half. DSU (4-19, 2-8 MEAC) went up 12-10 after a 3-pointer by Abraham at the 10:01 mark, giving the Lady Hornets a lead they would maintain for the rest of the half.

DSU led by as many as nine, 21-12, with 4:21 left in the opening period, but the Spartans chipped away at that lead and went into halftime down by one, 25-24, after a layup by Genor Dalton with 31 seconds on the clock.

In the second half, the Spartans went up four, 29-25, after a 3-pointer by Recca Trice with 18:32 left in the game, but found themselves down again after a three-point play by Kianna D'Oliveira with 17:08 left. The closest NSU could get after that was two (39-37) after a layup by Batavia Owens  with 9:03 left.
