UMES Outlasts Howard in Overtime, 68-66
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Free-throws hindered the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team in their last game, but that wasn't the case tonight as they went 6-for-6 in the overtime period and 78.9 percent overall to defeat Howard University, 68-66, at a packed Burr Gymnasium.
With the win and season series sweep, the Hawks improve to 10-19 overall and register their first double-digit winning season since 2001-02 when they went 11-18. UMES returns above .500 in MEAC play with an 8-7 record, which is currently good for fourth in the conference.
Junior Freddy Obame Obame had a career night with 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting and five free throws made in 21 minutes played.
Fellow junior Kevin White led the Hawks in scoring with 16 points, six assists and two steals. Tim Burns, another junior, also registered in double digits with 15 points, including 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the overtime period.
The start of the game was sloppy and low scoring with seven turnovers combined and the Hawks leading 4-2 with 11:49 on the clock.
Freshman Sean Berry came up with a huge block at 11:06 which resulted in a fast-break layup by Burns to make the score 6-5, in favor of UMES. A steal by freshman Mark Robertson also turned into fast-break points, this time by junior Josh Bright, to go up by three at 12-9.
A minute later, the Bison would tie the game off of a 3-pointer by Curtis White and then take the lead for the remainder of the half with a dunk by Mike Phillips.

Smith's late layup gives Morgan win over Norfolk State in 2OT
BALTIMORE, Md. - Troy Smith hit a layup with 4 seconds remaining pushed Morgan State to an 88-87 win over Norfolk State in double overtime on Saturday at Hill Field House.
Smith finished with 19 points for the Bears (22-9, 13-1 MEAC), while Reggie Holmes led the way with 25 points. Kevin Thompson collected his 19th double-double of the season by finishing with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Trailing by two at the end of regulation, Smith made two free throws with 21 seconds left to tie the game at 70 and force the first overtime.
Norfolk State (9-18, 7-7) took a three-point lead, but Morgan State's Joe Davis nailed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 79 and force the second extra period.
Aleek Pauline's layup put the Spartans ahead in the second overtime with nine seconds left, but Smith responded with the game-winning basket.

Harper Leads Eagles to Homecoming Victory
BALTIMORE, Md. - Michael Harper scored a career-high 30 points leading Coppin State to a 77-65 victory over North Carolina A&T on Saturday in the Eagles Homecoming game in the Physical Education Complex.
Harper finished the game 10-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 from the three-point line. He also made all six of his free throw attempts and had three steals and three rebounds.
Junior Ceslovas Kucinskas added 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Vince Goldsberry scored 11 points and Sam Coleman had 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Eagles (8-19, 3-11 MEAC) shot 48.3 percent from the floor, including 54.2 percent in the second half, while limiting North Carolina A&T to 35.2 percent shooting. Coppin State also made 16 of its 18 free throw attempts and outscored the Aggies 16-6 from the line.
North Carolina A&T (10-19, 6-8 MEAC) was led by Robert Johnson who scored 18 points and Thomas Coleman who had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Tavarus Alston added 12 points for the Aggies.
Coppin State built a big lead midway through the second half and then held off a late North Carolina A&T charge.
Coppin State used a 14-0 run to take a 66-44 lead with 8:32 to play in the game as Goldsberry and Harper each scored five points during the run.

S.C State Holds Off Bethune-Cookman 58-46
ORANGEBURG, SC- Senior guard/forward Jason Flagler tossed in a game-high 17 points, while Brandon Smalls chipped in 14 and grabbed five rebounds as South Carolina State defeated Bethune-Cookman 58-46 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play Saturday.
South Carolina State improves to 15-12 overall, 9-6 in the MEAC, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 15-14 overall, 7-8 in the league.
South Carolina State jumped out to its biggest lead of the first-half nine, 19-10 off a layup by senior Jason Flagler at the 6:27 mark. A layup by Javoris Bryant pull Bethune-Cookman within four, 19-15 with 2:35 left in the half.
Brandon Smalls jumper with 2:16 left put the Bulldogs ahead six, 21-15. Freshman point guard Khalif Toombs nailed a jumper with 0:014 seconds left to give SC State a 23-16 advantage at halftime.
Junior guard Tyvon Williams drilled a 3-pointer at the 8:48 mark to put the Bulldogs ahead 18, 45-27. Toombs jumper with 2:27 left in the game sealed the victory for SC State in a much needed MEAC contest.
Bethune-Cookman was led by C.J. Reed with nine points, while Javoris Bryant, Stanley Elliott, and Aric Miller each chipped in eight in the loss.

Three Players in Double Figures Moves Rattlers Past Rams 75-61
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem State's two best players, senior guard Brian Fisher and junior forward Paul Davis, combined to score only seven points on Saturday afternoon at the C.E. Gaines Center as Florida A&M earned a hard-fought 75-61 victory over WSSU in men's MEAC basketball action.
Davis, who leads the team with 11.6 points per game this season was held to two points in 20 minutes of playing time as he found himself in foul trouble early in the first half. The two point scoring performance marks only the ninth time this season that Davis has been held to single digits in scoring.
Fisher, the Rams second leading scorer who entered into the contest with a scoring average of 11.4 points per game hit only one of his six field goal attempts en route to only five points in 23 minutes of work as the duo was held to seven combined points and was forced into eight turnovers.
Despite the difficulties of Davis and Fisher the Rams jumped out to an early lead which they pushed to a game high 10 points with 12:34 remaining in the first half.

Pirates Roar Past Hornets
HAMPTON, Va. - The Hampton Pirates came out strong and made it three in a row on Saturday, beating Delaware State 64-45 at the HU Convocation Center.
Frisco Sandidge hit a jumper with 12:58 to play to pull Delaware State within 41-38, but the Pirates responded with a 12-0 run, going up 53-38 at the 8:26 mark on a Vincent Simpson transition layup. The Hornets would pull to within 11 on a Marcus Neal 3-pointer with 6:38 to play, but again Hampton (11-17, 7-8 MEAC) answered.
Darrion Pellum sank a layup with 3:53 to play that capped an 8-0 run for the Pirates and put them up 61-42. Charles Funches added a jumper with 1:06 to play to put Hampton up 63-44.
Michael Freeman led the Pirates with his 12th double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Pellum added 12 points for the Pirates, while Kwame Morgan II went 3-for-3 from behind the arc en route to scoring 10 points.
The Pirates shot 45.7 percent (21-for-46) from the floor and 81.0 percent (17-for-21) from the free throw line. Hampton also held a 30-28 rebounding advantage, while forcing Delaware State (15-11, 10-5 MEAC) into 21 turnovers.
Neal scored a team-high 12 points for the Hornets, who shot 40.9 percent (18-for-44) from the floor and made just five of 14 free throws. Marques Oliver added 11 points, while both Oliver and Neal led Delaware State with six rebounds each.
