Ta'Wuana Cook Spoils Coppin State Homecoming

BALTIMORE -- Ta'Wuana Cook scored a career-high 33 points, including 26 in the first half, leading North Carolina A&T to a 72-53 victory over Coppin State on Saturday in the Physical Education Complex.

Cook finished the game 13-of-23 from the floor and made 7-of-17 three-point attempts to help the Aggies post their 20th victory of the season. With the win, North Carolina A&T improved to 20-8 overal and 13-1 in the MEAC.

The Aggies forced Coppin State into 24 turnovers and scored 30 points off of those turnovers and outscored the Eagles 27-3 from the three-point line.

Coppin State (9-17, 4-10 MEAC) was led by sophomore Jeanine Manley who scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Eagles also received 10 points and three rebounds from senior Lakeytah Irving.

SC State Women Earn 71-67 Overtime Victory Over B-CU

ORANGEBURG, SC -South Carolina State squandered a 13-point second-half lead, but outscored Bethune-Cookman 11-7 in overtime to earn a 71-67 victory over the visitors Saturday at S-H-M Memorial Center.

Trinese Fox had 16 points -- five in the extra period - to lead a balanced Lady Bulldog scoring attack. Sunika Bullen, who connected on 4-5 baskets from three-point range, added 14 points, Sophilia Hipps 13 and Paris Alston 10 and a game high 12 rebounds.

Coach Doug Robertson's team improved to 10-17 and 5-10 in the MEAC with the victory, the second in a row for SC State.

Jasmine Daniels led the way for the Lady Wildcats with 13 points. Euneshia Proctor and Demetria Frank contributed 12 each and Jasmine Bugg added 11. B-CU dropped to 14-13 and 9-6 in the MEAC with the loss.

Daniels added two free throws just over a minute later to push the lead to 56-53 before SC State's Whitney Wiley, who had missed her first 11 shots, connected on a 3-pointer to deadlock the contest at 56-all with 2:21 remaining in regulation.

Each team scored four points each the rest of the way, but missed opportunities to pull the game out in regulation which ended up 60-60.

B-CU scored the first basket in the overtime, a layup by Frank, to take a 64-62 edge but the Lady Bulldogs scored the next eight - three by Fox -- for a 68-62 advantage with 54 seconds left and hung on for the win.

Morgan State Sweeps Series Against Norfolk State, 80-62; Improves to 7-1 at Home  

BALTIMORE- (Feb. 27, 2010)-Corin Adams scored a game-high 21 points to lead four Lady Bears in double figures, as Morgan State defeated visiting Norfolk State, 80-62 in a MEAC game at Hill Field House on Saturday afternoon. Adams also tied Norfolk State's Recca Trice with a game-high eight assists.

Erin Hawkins led Morgan State's bench attack, scoring 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Brittany Dodson, 3-for-4 from three-point range and Kristina Rosario both added 10 points in a reserve role, to lead the Lady Bears to their seventh straight win over Norfolk State. The win also helped the Lady Bears sweep the season series with the Spartans and improved the team to 7-1 this season at home.

 Norfolk State (4-20, 0-14 MEAC) was led by Tyisha Bridges, Raychele Payne and Whitney Long, who all scored a team-high 12 points for the Spartans, who have dropped nine of their last 10 games, including their fourth straight road loss. Marian Brooks added 10 points.

Brown, Doyle Get Help From Curley Payne In Howard Victory

Washington, DC-February 27--Zykia Brown scored a team-high 18 points and Saadia Doyle recorded her 18th double- double of the season, but it was the play of freshman Cheyenne Curley-Payne who tallied 10 of her 15 points and came up with some key steals in the second half to help Howard defeat Maryland Eastern Shore, 62-57 in a MEAC game at Burr Gymnasium.  The Lady Bison swept the Lady Hawks on the season.

 Curley Payne, the starting freshman point guard, made some key free throws and got some steals on defense to give her team its fourth straight win.

Doyle recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  She made all 8 of her free throw attempts.  Freshman forward Portia Deterville made a significant contribution with 7 points off the bench and Kara Smith, still another freshman, contributed five rebounds and four assists.

Lady Rams Fade Late in 66-52 Home Loss to Florida A&M

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - After building a six-point halftime lead, the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-26 did all they could, but could not hold on in a 66-52 home loss to the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (16-10), Saturday afternoon.

WSSU junior guard MaLisa Bumpus led the Lady Rams' attack with a team-high 16 points and seven assists in the game. She also added a pair of steals. However, she was the only Lady Ram to reach double-digit scoring in the game. The forward tandem of sophomore Jordhan Peterson and Vontisha Woods recorded five rebounds each in the game.

FAMU (16-10) was paced by Antonia Bennett with a game high 24 points.  Tameka McKelton added 17 and  Deidra Jones finished with 13.  Both Simone Durden and Bennett led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with eight each.  LaShonda Gaines led the team in assists with four.
