The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Head Women's Bowling Coach Sharon Brummell has been named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Women's Bowling Committee. Her term will begin September 1, 2010 and end September 1, 2014.
Brummell replaces Tara Wuorinen from St. Peter's College as the Division I representative. She joins five other members, Dean Lee, the AD at Arkansas State, Jeff McCorvey the Head Coach at Alabama A&M, Bob Cincotta, the Head Coach at Adelphi and a newly elected representative who replaces Frank Parisi, the Head Coach at New Jersey City. Both Wuorinen and Parisi's terms end on September 1st. Brummell will be the only woman on the committee until 2011 when two more members cycle off.
As a member of the committee, Brummell will serve as regional chairperson, serve on the national committee, serve as a NCAA Representative at the NCAA Bowling Championship and participate in the annual committee meeting.
In those roles Brummell will be tasked with ensuring representation from conference and independents from their region, participate in selection of teams for the championship, select host sites for championships, make rules modifications, recommend officials for the National Championship, oversee all activity at the Championship, review misconduct issues, update rules manuals, and many other tasks. Brummell has been the Head Coach of the UMES Women's Bowling team for 12 seasons. She oversaw the team's transition from an emerging sport to a full-fledged NCAA team. She led the Lady Hawks to the 2008 NCAA National Championship, was named the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) National Coach of the Year and has been the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Coach of the Year four times. UMES has won the MEAC Championship four times (2000, 2006, 2007, 2008) and she has coached 12 All-Americans and the NCAA Most Outstanding Performer, Jessica Worsley, in 2008. Worsley was also the MEAC Woman of the Year that same season.
Brummell serves at the Assistant Director of Athletics for Budgeting and Travel as well as the Senior Woman Administrator at UMES. She is a 1989 graduate of Salisbury University where she played women's volleyball. Brummell resides in Salisbury, Md. with her husband Vince. Her son Bobby is an intern with UMES Athletics, working with student-athlete academics. A native of Chicago, Ill., she is a member of NACWAA, NACDA, MOAA, CABMA, NCBCA and the NTCA. She is currently in the process of obtaining her USA Silver Coaching Certification.
