Hampton Sails Past FAMU, 65-48

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb. 22) - Hampton grabbed an early advantage and never let up as they sailed past Florida A&M, 65-48 in a MEAC game at the Al Lawson Center Monday night.

The loss was the second straight for FAMU (15-10, 7-7 in MEAC), while Hampton (15-11, 10-4) improved its' chances at a top five regular season finish with the victory.

FAMU was led by sophomore Qiana Donald with 19 points and seven, followed by senior Deidra Jones with 15 points.

Hampton had three players score in double figures, led by guard Bernadette Fortune with 17 points, Choicetta McMillan with 12 points and Quanneisha Perry with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Lady Rams Offense Stifled in 63-31 Loss at North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-25) couldn't find an answer for the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies (19-8), Monday evening as the team took a 63-31 loss.

Junior forward Vontisha Woods led the Lady Rams with seven points in the game and was one of just three Lady Rams with more than one field goal in the game.

The second half saw the Lady Rams post some better performances at both ends of the court as an aggressive offensive effort, combined with a much better defensive effort allowed the team to keep the Lady Aggies within 23 points, 41-18 with 11:53 left to play. However, the Lady Rams' struggles would arise once more with North Carolina A&T mounting an 18-5 run that left the Lady Rams trailing 59-24 with 4:06 left to play.

The Lady Rams would make a run in the final minutes behind some solid play by redshirt-sophomore guard Taneisha White as the team outscored the Lady Aggies, 7-4 over the final four minutes and finished the evening with the 63-31 loss.

Lady Hawks Squeek By Morgan State, 66-64, On Senior Day

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Three players scored double figures led by junior Latoya Buckner with 15 off the bench, as Maryland Eastern Shore held on for a 66-64 win on Senior Day at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday.

The victory for UMES (10-14, 7-7 MEAC) improves it to .500 in conference play and is it's second in as many games.  Morgan State (14-12, 9-4) snapped a three-game winning streak with the loss.

Morgan State's Corin Adams led all scorers with 18 points and added six steals, five rebounds and two assists. Junior Casey Morton and senior April McBride tallied 14 and 11 points, respectively for UMES. Morton chipped in with three assists and a steal and McBride, who was named MEAC Player of the Week earlier in the day, had eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Strong Second Half Propels DSU Past Coppin State

Dover, Del. (Feb. 22, 2010) --- Delaware State outscored Coppin State 28-18 in the second half en route to a 53-41 win over the Lady Eagles in MEAC game Monday evening.

The Lady Hornets improved to 6-21 overall and 4-9 in the MEAC, while Coppin State fell to 9-16 and 4-9.

Cortney Crockett led Delaware State with 12 points, while teammate Brittany Washington had a game-high 13 rebounds. Washington has reached double-figures in rebounds in each of the last five games.

Crystal Whittington was high scorer for Coppin State with 12 points.

Delaware State was ahead by as many as seven points in the first half, but settled for a 25-23 lead at the break.

Delaware State used a 14-2 run midway through the second half to take control for good. Selena Galloway capped off the run with a lay up to give DSU a 49-34 lead with 3:58 left to play. Six players scored for DSU during the spurt.

Hipps, Wiley Spoil Home Finale For Spartan Women With 63-51 Win

NORFOLK, Va. - Sophilia Hipps scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, while teammate Whitney Wiley had 13 points to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 63-51 win over Norfolk State on Monday afternoon at Echols Hall.

NSU (4-19, 0-13 MEAC), playing in its final home game of the season, started the game on a 4-0 run, but Hipps and Wiley combined for SCSU's (9-17, 4-10 MEAC) first seven points to give the Lady Bulldogs a lead they would maintain for the rest of the game.

Whitney Long led NSU with 16 points, while Genor Dalton had 12 and Batavia Owens had 10. Dalton and Owens led all players with eight rebounds each.

Bison Roll Over Wildcats, 59-53

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - Saadia Doyle scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half and Zykia Brown added 17 as Howard defeated Bethune-Cookman (BCU), 59-53 on Monday evening at the Ocean Center. The win pushed HU to 9-5 in the MEAC and into a fourth-place tie with BCU in league standings.

Howard (14-12, 9-5 MEAC) has won two-straight road games and has won three of the past four games overall.

Brown was 6-for-12 from the field and 2-for-2 from long range, while Doyle connected on 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Doyle also pulled down 11 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. Cheyenne Curley-Payne contributed eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Lady Bison. The freshman also inked four free-throws in the final 20 seconds to help seal the win for HU.

Demetria Frank and Jasmine Daniels scored 13 and 11 for the Wildcats, respectively, and Euneshia Proctor finished with 11 points Bethune-Cookman (14-12, 9-5 MEAC).
