FAMU's Late Charge Sinks UMES In Overtime, 75-67

Senior April McBride recorded a career-high 31 points, including 25 in the second half and overtime, but Maryland Eastern Shore fell in overtime to Florida A&M, 75-67, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Wednesday.

McBride shot 10-for-20 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line, adding seven rebounds, as UMES dropped its third straight game in conference to fall to 8-14 (5-7 MEAC).

Tameka McKelton led FAMU with 30 points and 13 rebounds to help the Lady Rattlers to their third straight win and improve to 15-8 and 7-5 in the MEAC.

It was McBride's third consecutive game scoring 20-or-more points, but snapped a streak of two double-doubles in a row.

UMES held a 57-47 lead with 5:57 left before Florida A&M used a 16-6 run to knot the game at 63-63 and send the game into an extra session on a wide-open 3-pointer from the top of the key by Christian Rateree with .3 seconds to go.

Freshman Latoya Buckner and junior Chena Parker also scored in double figures for UMES with 11 and 10, respectively. Qiana Donald had a double-double of 11 points and 14 boards.

FAMU outscored UMES, 12-4, in the overtime period to take the win. Tied at 65 in with 13:28 to play, McKelton hit a driving layup and was fouled, completing a three-point play before she put the game away on the next possession with a trey for a 71-65 edge. McKelton knocked down four free throws with a minute to play for the final margin.

UMES overcame a 27-25 halftime deficit, taking its first lead of the game with a McBride three on an assist from redshirt sophomore Bria Jackson at the 18:26 mark and built a nine-point advantage at 47-38 with less than 12 minutes remaining. Buckner knocked down one of her two from long range on the night for that lead. She had arguably her best collegiate game for the Hawks, going 4-for-11 from the field with four assists and a steal in 24 minutes.

McBride hit another jumper to give UMES its first double-digit lead (55-45) of the game with 7:02 to play but McKelton led FAMU  back with five points in the game-tying run prior to the lest-second three by Rateree.

The Lady Rattlers kept UMES off the scoreboard for the game's first 6:28, taking an 8-0 lead on a three-point play by Donald, a bucket from Eliza Bryant and another longball by McKelton.

UMES battled back to tie the score at 14-all on a three-point play from Parker at the 8:39 mark. McKelton tallied yet another three on the next trip for FAMU and the visitors were back up, 27-20, with two minutes to play in the half. UMES, though, closed with a McBride three and a Parker layup going into the half.

FAMU outshot UMES on the night. The Rattlers were 26-for-67 (38.8 percent) while UMES shot 21-of-64 (32.8 percent) from the floor. FAMU also outrebounded the host, 56-38, including 22-17 on the offensive glass, which led to 23 second-chance points.

FAMU turned the ball over 20 times to 15 for UMES. Each team converted the miscues into 15 points.
