Morgan State Grind Out Victory versus Hornets, 68-65

DOVER, Del. - The Bears entered tonight's game attempting to bounce back from their first conference loss since February 2009, and they appeared hungry to get back in the win column.

Reggie Holmes scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the second half and Morgan State outlasted the Hornets 68-65 on Wednesday night at Memorial Hall in front of a packed crowd.

With the win the Bears improved to 20-8 (11-1 in the MEAC) and maintained their 3-game lead with four games left to play to clinch their third consecutive regular season conference championship.

Kevin Thompson had 14 points and 10 rebounds -- his 17th double-double of the season for Morgan State, which finished with a 40-21 rebound advantage.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Hornets, who fell to 14-10 and 9-4. Delaware State was limited to 36 percent (20-55) shooting from the field, while the Bears shot 49 percent (25-51), including 15-for-20 from the free throw line.

Morgan State (No. 13 in Mid-Major Poll) led 30-26 at halftime and had its biggest lead of the game at 48-37 on a 3-pointer by Holmes with 10:10 to play. Holmes scored 11 of his 17 points during the Bears second half surge.

But the Hornets continued to battle and trimmed the Bears lead to 61-60 following a basket by Frisco Sandidge (12 pts) and a 3-pointer by Chad Wilson (8 pts).

Aggies Guards Lead N.C. A&T to Victory over S.C. State Bulldogs

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina A&T men's basketball lacks a do-it-all guard. So the Aggies used four guards to provide them with everything they needed to defeat S.C. State 87-69 at Corbett Sports Center Wednesday night.

Point guards Tavarus Alston and Marc Hill provided the dribble penetration and scoring. Junior Nic Simpson contributed with timely 3-point shooting and senior Dwane Joshua took care of the rebounding. Alston finished with 23 points and six assists, while Hill added a career-high 18 points. Simpson scored 12 points on four 3-pointers and Dwane Joshua grabbed seven rebounds.

The Aggies (10-17, 6-7) won their second straight game, and for the second time in three home games, N.C. A&T shot better than 50 percent from the floor. The Aggies improved shooting allowed them to maintain the lead over the first 26 minutes.

But S.C. State's Jason Flagler hit a jump shot from the free throw line to give the Bulldogs a 45-44 lead with 13:25 remaining. Nic Simpson didn't let the Bulldog rally last for long as he took a handoff from Alston and scored on a 3-pointer to give N.C. A&T a two-point lead.

S.C. State would find themselves back in the lead 49-48 on a Darnell Porter turnaround jumper in the lane with 10:45 to play. This time Alston answered by pulling up for a jumper in the lane to put the Aggies ahead. Aggies center James Porter got the Aggies the ball back by taking a charge on Tyvon Williams.
