UMES Tops Long Island In Overtime Win, 58-56
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Chelsea Sanders and Kwinnyata Mercer scored 13 points each and the Maryland Eastern Shore held off Long Island, 58-56, in overtime at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Wednesday.
Tied at 49 with 29 seconds to play in the second half, Long Island called a timeout when inbounding the ball but had none remaining for a technical foul and two free throws for UMES' Mercer. Mercer calmly stepped to the line and drained both for the lead.
LIU's Marika Sprow then fouled Amber Cook on the ensuing possession but Cook missed the front end of a 1-and-1 that could have put the game out of reach.
Instead, Ashley Palmer corralled the rebound and missed a jumper. Kiara Evans grabbed the offensive board and was herself fouled. Evans knotted the game at 51 with a pair from the line with 10 seconds left. Mercer then missed a three and LIU rebounded before Palmer missed a jumper that hit the rim at the buzzer, sending the game to an extra session.
Mercer opened overtime hitting a trey from the left corner from Cook to put UMES up, 54-51, with 4:07 remaining and UMES didn't look back.
Palmer led all players with 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Evans scored 17 and Chelsi Johnson had 13 for Long Island.
The win for UMES (2-3) snaps a three-game losing streak and extends LIU's (4-4) skid to three.
The win is the first for UMES against LIU in five tries.
