MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

 

NORFOLK, Va., December 6, 2010 - North Carolina A&T's Thomas Coleman was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Desi Washington of Delaware State was named the Rookie of the Week while Norfolk State's Kyle O'Quinn earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades for the second week in a row.

Coleman (C, 6-9, 240, Sr., Louisville, Ky.) averaged a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds as he led the Aggies to a 2-0 mark with wins over UNC-Greensboro and Norfolk State last week.  He connected on over 65-percent (17-of-26) of his shots and tallied seven blocks, three assists and three steals in the two victories.  Against Norfolk State, Coleman hit the game-tying free throw to send the game into overtime.  He then scored four points, had two blocks and one assist in the overtime win.  He finished the performance with 24 points, 14 rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists and two steals.

Washington (G, 6-2, 175, Fr., Harrisburg, Pa.) led the Hornets offensive efforts last week with 16.3 points and hauled in 3.3 rebounds per game.  He shot 47-percent from the field (17-of-36) and 41-percent (9-of-22) from long range. Also, he was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.  The rookie guard averaged 37.0 minutes in three games and recorded double-digit performances of 16, 16 and 17 points in games against La Salle, South Carolina and Maryland Eastern Shore.  

O'Quinn (F/C, 6-10, 240, Jr., Jamaica, N.Y.) averaged 14.5 boards, 4.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in two games last week for the Norfolk State Spartans.  He grabbed 11 boards with six blocked shots and two steals in a nine point loss to Iona (73-64).  He followed that performance with 18 rebounds and three blocks in 43 minutes of play against North Carolina A&T.  Offensively, O'Quinn contributed 49 total points, shooting 43-percent from the field, and dished out four assists in two games. 

Other Top Performers

Danny Agbelese (HAM) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds with four blocks and one steal in Hampton's 67-55 win over Howard.

Rasheem Jenkins (FAMU) led the Rattlers with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal in a loss to Bethune-Cookman. 

Marques Oliver (DSU) recorded a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds in the Hornets' 64-53 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Darrion Pellum (HAM) averaged 17.5 points and 3.0 rebounds to lead Hampton to victories over Georgia State and Howard last week.

Mike Phillips (HOW) tallied 32 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded three steals, while averaging 35 minutes, in two games last week for the Bison. 

CJ Reed (B-CU) played the entire 40 minutes and scored 19 points with six rebounds, seven assists and one steal to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 62-55 win over Florida A&M. 

Amin Stevens (FAMU) posted back-to-back double-digit scoring performances of 13 points in a win over Webber International and 12 points against Bethune-Cookman. He also grabbed nine rebounds in each outing. 

Jay Threatt (DSU) dished out 26 assists and stole 10 passes to go along with 11 points and 12 rebounds in three games last week for the Hornets.
