MEAC Announces Men's Basketball Weekly Honors

Hampton senior guard Charles Funches was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Delaware State guard Casey Walker was named the Rookie of the Week and North Carolina A&T center Thomas Coleman and Morgan State forward Kevin Thompson earned Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors respectively.   

Funches (G, 6-8., 210, Sr., Jersey City, NJ) fell one rebound shy of back-to-back double double performances as he led the Pirates to non-conference victories over Towson and Liberty.  Against Towson Funches scored 26 points and 12 rebounds connecting on 9-of-16 baskets from the field and 1-of-1 from behind the arc.  He also added two assists and one steal in 35 minutes of play.  He followed that performance with 17 points and nine boards against Liberty.  He also recorded two blocks and one steal, playing the entire 40 minutes to improve the Pirates to 9-2.


Walker (G, 6-4, 185, Fr., Broadnax, Va.) scored 20 points, hitting 4-of-8 from long range and 4-of-5 from the charity strip in the Hornets' 72-70 loss to N.C. State.  He also added one block while playing 38 minutes in the non-conference defeat.

Coleman (C, 6-9, 240, Sr., Louisville, Ky.) hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds with three blocks and two steals in a 56-50 loss to Arizona State.  He also contributed nine points and dished one out assist in 34 minutes of play. 

Thompson (F, 6-9, 240, Jr., Baltimore, Md.) grabbed 12 boards, blocked three shots and stole three passes in the Bears' loss to No. 5 Syracuse. Offensively, he connected on 50-percent from the field (6-of-12) for 15 points. 

Other Top Performances

Danny Agbelese (HAM) scored 12 points, pulled down six rebounds, blocked three shots and recorded one steal in the Pirates 78-67 victory over Towson. 

 Justin Black (MSU) was perfect from 3-point territory (4-of-4) to score 14 points, two rebounds and two assists in the Bears' loss to No.5 Syracuse.

Rob Hampton (NSU) recorded a combined 36 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist in two non-conference games against Virginia and Evansville.

Mike Phillips (HOW) scored a game-high 19 points, including six of the team's last 10 points to lead Howard to a 69-65 win over Loyola of Maryland. He also grabbed seven boards, stole two passes and blocked one shot. 

Nic Simpson (NCAT) recorded 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal in the Aggies' 56-50 loss to Arizona State.
