MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

 

NORFOLK, Va., December 13, 2010 - Coppin State guard Tony Gallo and Florida A&M guard/forward Amin Stevens were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Casey Walker of Delaware State was named the Rookie of the Week while North Carolina A&T's Thomas Coleman earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Gallo (G, 5-11, 190, Lynn, Mass.) averaged 17.5 points and 3.5 rebounds as he led the Eagles to a 2-0 mark last week.  Gallo scored 19 points with four rebounds in a 66-65 win over Navy.  He followed that performance with 16 points and three rebounds in a non-conference win against West Virginia Tech. 

Stevens (G/F, 6-6, 185, Soph., Roswell, Ga.) connected on 9-of-15 shots (60-percent) for 21 points to lead the Rattlers to an 82-79 win over Warner Southern.  Stevens shot 50-percent from long range (1-of-2) and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.  He also hauled down seven boards, stole two passes and recorded one block and one assist in 30 minutes of play.

Walker (G, 6-4, 185, Fr., Broadnax, Va.) collected 38 total points with 12 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal in three outings last week for the Hornets.  Against Maine, Walker recorded a career-high 25 points (8-of-15), shooting 6-of-10 from 3-point range with five rebounds, two blocks and one steal. 

Coleman (C, 6-9, 240, Sr., Louisville, Ky.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, nine defensive, with four blocks and two steals in North Carolina A&T's, 74-58, loss to Mississippi State.  Offensively he added 14 points and two assists in 31 minutes of play. 

Other Top Performances

Tyler Hines (UMES) recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds against Evansville.

Marques Oliver (DSU) tallied 24 points, eight blocks, four steals and one assist in three games last week for the Hornets. 

Kyle O'Quinn (NSU) posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds with two blocks and one steal against Maine.

Pendarvis Williams (NSU) scored 11 points, shooting 75-percent from behind the arc, with a career-high six assists and three steals against Maine.
