Long's Big Day Carries NSU Over Houston Baptist, 60-50
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Junior Whitney Long poured in 23 points, including three key 3-pointers in the second half, in a 60-50 win over Houston Baptist Friday afternoon at the Comfort Inn & Suites Classic at Ellis T. Johnson Arena at Morehead State.
Long hit 9-of-17 shots, including 5-of-8 from the 3-point line, for the second-highest point total of her career in helping NSU move to 2-0 on the season for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign. Houston Baptist fell to 0-3 on the year.
Sophomore Batavia Owens totaled 11 points with six rebounds, while freshman Rae Corbo provided a huge spark offensively and defensively in the second half. The Englewood, N.J., native had 10 points, eight in the second half, with game highs of five assists and four steals.
NSU's defensive effort forced 23 turnovers to just 16 for the Spartans, with NSU posting a 13-5 advantage in steals. NSU converted those turnovers into 30 points. After some early-game struggles, the Spartans took control of the boards, outrebounding the Huskies, 42-32.
The teams were nearly even on the floor, with NSU shooting 41.1 percent and HBU hitting 41.9 percent. NSU could not convert from the charity stripe, though, as the Spartans hit just 9-of-24 from the free throw line (37.5 percent), compared to 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) for the Huskies.
HBU was led by Destini Texada with 13 points, while Brittany Barton added 11. Ernesta Griciunaite had a game-high 12 rebounds and added six points.

Lady Pirates Fall To Charlotte 64-57
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Hampton lost 64-57 to Charlotte in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT on Friday in Halton Arena despite two Lady Pirates scoring in double figures.
Senior forward Quanneisha Perry and junior guard Choicetta McMillian each led Hampton (1-2) with 16 points, and Perry added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
Perry shot 7-for-13 from the floor, while McMillian went 5-for-17 from the floor and 2-for-8 from 3-point range.
The Lady Pirates shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) from the floor, while also shooting 75 percent (9-for-12) from the free throw line. Hampton made just two of 10 3-point attempts.
The 49ers (2-1) shot 41.7 percent (25-for-60) from the floor and out-rebounded the Lady Pirates 42-40. Charlotte forced 20 Hampton turnovers and was able to survive shooting just 48.1 percent (13-for-27) from the free throw line.
McCallum scored a game-high 22 points for the 49ers after shooting 9-for-13 from the floor, while adding a team-high 15 rebounds. Kendria Holmes added 11 points.

Hornets Fall To Mountaineers In Season Opener
Dover, Del. (Nov. 19, 2010) --- Delaware State scored 11 first half points in a 66-31 loss to nationally ranked West Virginia in the season opener for the Lady Hornets in Morgantown, W.V.
Madina Ali led three Mountaineer players in double figures with 13 points. West Virginia (3-0) is No. 10 in the latest Associated Press poll of Top 25 women's basketball teams and No. 11 by USA Today.
Sophomore Crystal Pitt came off the bench to lead Delaware State with six points. Freshman Deanna had five points for the Lady Hornets.
Delaware State hit just 3 of 30 first half shots (10%) and trailed 34-11 at the break. The Hornets improved to 6 of 18 shooting in the second half (33.3%).
DSU was also plagued by 30 turnovers in the contest.
