Hawks Post Perfect 10-0 Mark At MEAC North Meet

 

 

COLLEGE PARK, Md.-T'Nia Falbo and Maria Rodriguez each averaged over 208 in five games to help guide the second ranked University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to a perfect 10-0 mark in conference play over the weekend.  The Hawks (21-4, 10-0 MEAC) posted five wins each in team and Baker games to take sole possession of the standings in the MEAC Northern Division.

Falbo had her best performance as a Hawk, rolling a career high 256 in the win over No. 16 Morgan State and averaging a 208.60, another career high for a tournament average.  She also posted plus 200 games in wins over Hampton (208) and Coppin State (203).  She would tally a pin fall of 1,043 over all five team games.

Rodriguez was almost as good, posting a pin fall of 1,042, just one pin less, to average a 208.40.  She rolled a 257 against Morgan State, the highest individual game of the meet.  Rodriguez, the MEAC Pre-season Player of the Year, posted other plus 200 games in wins over Coppin State (208) and Howard (228).

In the Baker sets the Hawks dominated in all five matches.  They posted an 811-753 win over the Bears of Morgan State and kept rolling from there, tallying a 138 pin win over Hampton (773-635), just shy of a 200 pin win over Howard (791-592), a 99 pin win over Delaware State (773-674) and a thumping of Coppin State by a whopping 362 pins, 887-525.

Spartans Take First Place at MEAC Southern Divisional

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 19 Norfolk State bowling team kicked off conference play in strong fashion, finishing in first place over the weekend at the MEAC Southern Divisional at Gate City Lanes and hosted by North Carolina A&T.

The Spartans posted a 7-3 record on the weekend, finishing ahead of Florida A&M and North Carolina Central, both of whom had 6-4 marks. FAMU had a 5-0 record on the first day in the team format round, but went just 1-4 in the Baker games Sunday as NSU surged ahead.

South Carolina State (5-5), North Carolina A&T (4-6) and Bethune-Cookman (2-8) rounded out the field of play.

The Spartans posted a 3-2 mark on Saturday in the team format play, defeating South Carolina State, 927-814, North Carolina A&T, 932-737, and Bethune-Cookman, 830-768.

Junior Sheila-Marie Smith had the top overall pinfall during the team format round, totaling 916 pins for a 183.2 average in five games, including the top single game by a Spartan on the day, 209.

Freshman Thea Aspiras was right behind Smith with an average of 181.6, while junior Chelsea Krall bowled all five games and averaged 175.8. Senior Antoinette Drakeford rolled a 205 and posted a 181.0 average in three games, while sophomore Jessica Overton rolled the other two games for a 156.5 average.

Aggies Bowling Competes Well At Home

GREENSBORO - The North Carolina A&T bowling team was four spares away from turning what was a solid weekend into an outstanding one. 

The Aggies still came away with four wins at Gate City Lanes during what will be their only regular-season home meet. They competed against Bethune-Cookman, N.C. Central, Norfolk State, Florida A&M and S.C. State in the first MEAC Divisional Meet of the 2010-11 season.

Senior Sarah Taylor led the Aggies during the individual portion of the meet. Taylor bowled an average of 203.2 in five games, including a career-high game of 257 against N.C. Central as the Aggies defeated the Eagles 840-805. The other Aggies win during the individual portion came against Bethune-Cookman.

Taylor bowled a 205 and Amber Brown added a score of 181 to lead the Aggies to the 830-783 win. N.C. A&T completed the individual round 2-3. Junior April Terry chipped in with an average score of 169.8.

The Aggies also went 2-3 during the Team Baker round. The Aggies knocked off Bethune-Cookman and N.C. Central to finish the weekend 4-6. The Aggies had their best showing against the Wildcats. The 196 and 185 scores the Aggies posted against the Wildcats were the top two scores Baker the Aggies compiled during the Baker round.  

But two missed spares were again the difference.
