Lady Eagles Edge Tigers In Season Opener

TOWSON, Md. -- Leola Spotwood and Crystal Whittington each scored 17 points and Coppin State opened its 2010-11 season with a 75-68 victory over Towson on Friday in the Towson Center.

The Eagles also received a career-high 15 points and a career-high seven assists from sophomore Shawntae Payne and 10 points from freshman Larissa Carter in winning their season opener.

Coppin State held as much as a 15-point lead in the second half, but had to hold off a furious comeback by the Tigers to secure the victory.

It marked the first meeting between Coppin State and Towson since the 1996-97 season and the Eagles first win in the series since a 56-45 win on Dec. 4, 1992.

Coppin State shot 48.3 percent from the floor for the game, including 60.7 percent in the second half.

Towson committed 34 turnovers and made only 14-of-34 free throw attempts.

Lady Pirates Beat JMU In Preseason WNIT Opener

HARRISONBURG, Va. -Hampton made a statement on Friday in the first round of the Preseason WNIT, as the Lady Pirates defeated James Madison 69-64 at the JMU Convocation Center.

Friday's win was Hampton's first ever against JMU.

Senior forward Quanneisha Perry, the Preseason MEAC Player of the Year, led the Lady Pirates with 27 points on 10-for-20 shooting and a 7-for-9 effort from the free throw line, while also tying for the team high with seven rebounds. Junior guard Choicetta McMillian also had seven rebounds.

Junior guard Jericka Jenkins added 16 points on 7-for-16 shooting.

The Lady Pirates shot 42.6 percent (26-for-61) from the floor on the night, while also making 70.6 percent (12-for-17) of their free throws. James Madison out-rebounded Hampton 57-41, though the Lady Dukes pulled down 29 offensive rebounds in part because they shot just 26.9 percent (21-for-78) from the floor.

Dawn Evans, the Preseason Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, had a team-high 25 points, but she shot just 8-for-28 from the floor.

Kalu Scores 31 In Season Opener Win For Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Ezinne Kalu scored 31 points, had eight assists and three steals as Savannah State opened the 2010-11 season with a 86-42 victory over NAIA opponent Edward Waters.

The crowd of 756 saw the freshman point guard from Newark, New Jersey make 12-of-16 shots from the field and shoot 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

SSU (1-0) jumped out to a 16-3 lead with 12:29 left in the opening period

Edward Waters got within 19-9 but SSU went on a 11-3 run to go ahead by 18 with 6:04 on the clock.

SSU led 38-20 at the half.

Savannah State started the second period with a 14-0 run to go ahead by 32.

EWC closed within 27 with 12:06 left but Savannah State answered with a 22-4 surge to go ahead 78-33 with 4:16 on the clock.

SSU led by as many as 47 points late in the contest.

Darice Fountaine added 17 points and 9 rebounds while Courtney Long had15 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Alisha Nelson contributed a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

EWC (0-4) was led by Sharise Clopton's 12 points.

Chippewas Down Aggie Women

ROCK HILL, S.C. -North Carolina A&T had a hard time stopping Central Michigan from doing what it wanted to do offensively on Friday night.

As a result, the Chippewas shot 54.8 percent in a 119-71 win over the Aggies in the first game of the Winthrop Tournament played at the Winthrop Coliseum. Brandie Baker led the Chippewas with 12 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Kaihla Szunko chipped in with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman Mikala Scott led the Aggies with 17 points. Fellow freshman Sabre Proctor added 13.

After a Proctor 3-point play cut the Chippewas' lead to four at 19-15, the Aggies went through a five-minute stretch where they turned the ball over seven times. CMU took advantage by taking a 41-21 lead with 7:28 remaining in the first half.

Lady Bears Win Season Opener at SIUE, 73-70

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Nov. 12, 2010)-The Morgan State women's basketball team began the 2010-11 season without the services of the school's all-time leading scorer in Corin "Tiny" Adams and responded with a 73-70 victory over host Southern Illinois on Friday evening, in a non-conference game at Vadalabene Center.

The win was the Lady Bears' fourth season opening win in the last five years and evened their all-time record against the Ohio Valley Conference to 3-3.

Erin Hawkins scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting to lead five Lady Bears in double figures scoring, including four starters. Hawkins also tallied a game-high five assists and had a team-high three steals. DeKeisha Mathis came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Starters Brittany Dodson and Theresa Davis chipped in with 12 points, while Brittany Noel added 1o points. Davis led the way with a team-high seven rebounds.

Host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (SIUE) was led by Allyssa Decker, who came off the bench to score 12 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while fellow reserves Amanda Ledbetter and Jazmin Hill also scored 12 points apiece. Starter Sydney Stahlberg finished with 10 points and a game-high four steals.

Razorbacks Survive Lady Rattlers 71-62

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Nov. 12)  - In their season opener, the Florida A&M outscored Arkansas 40-35 in the second half  but the Razorbacks defeated the Lady Rattlers, 71-62 Friday afternoon at Bud Walton Arena.

FAMU (0-1) had three Lady Rattlers to score in double-digits as Tameka McKelton scored a team high 21 points,  Nicole Collins added 17 points, while Antonia Bennett pumped in 11.  Qiana Donald led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with 12, while Myeshia Collins dished out four assists.

Ark (1-0) also had three Razorbacks to finish in double-figures with C'eira Ricketts leading the way with a team high 21 points.  Behind her was Lyndsay Harris with 18 points, followed by Sarah Watkins with 11.  Ashley Daniels pulled down a team high nine rebounds for the Razorbacks, while Ricketts led the team in assists with four.

FAMU finished the game shooting 33.3 percent (23-of-69), while Ark shot 34.8 percent (23-of-66).  The Razorbacks out-rebounded the Lady Rattlers by a slim margin of 49-48.

Lady Bison Drop Season Opener to Buffalo, 86-63

BUFFALO, NY - The Howard Women's basketball team dropped its season opener to Buffalo, 86-63, on Fri. Nov. 12. Howard is back in action on Nov. 14 when it travels to play Vanderbilt beginning at 2 p.m.

Buffalo held a 40-35 edge on the glass over Howard. The Bulls scored 18 points off second chance opportunities, while holding the Lady Bison to just 10 points.

Saadia Doyle finished 10-of-11 from behind the charity stripe and 6-for-18 from the field for 22 points on the night. She also added a game-best 15 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Tamoria Holmes had 17 points - including a 5-for-7 mark from behind the arc.

As a team, the Lady Bison were held to a 33.9 shooting clip (19-for-56). Howard scored 13 points off 12 Bull miscues. Cheyenne Curley-Payne led the team with a game-best four steals.

The Bulls dominated the second 20 minutes - keeping its double-digit lead and outscoring HU 48-32. The Lady Bison only managed to sink eight baskets, but went 19-for-24 from the line.

For BU, Kourtney Brown had a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Brittany Hedderson finished with 19 points. Kisten Sharkey and Ephesia Holmes had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Lady Wildcats Pull Away From Florida Memorial in the Second Half for 70-53 Win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats rolled on Florida Memorial with a huge second half output. Though the score remained close in the first half, B-CU got the ball inside often to come away with the 70-53 victory to open the season.

Florida Memorial kept it a close game early in the first half, even leading for just over two minutes in the opening period, but a 6-0 B-CU run with just under five minutes on the clock created some breathing room for the Lady Cats.

The Lady Wildcats finished the half strong, with a 7-2 run that included a Jasmine Daniels three-pointer with eight seconds remaining, to head into the half leading by nine.

Demetria Frank led the team, scoring 19 points for the third consecutive game, while also grabbing eight rebounds and five steals.

Freshman contributions aided in the big win, as forward Amanda Hairston tallied 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. DJ Fowler had struggles from the field, often shooting inside to the split the defense, but she made up for it with a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line.
