MEAC Teams to Compete At NCAA Cross Country Regionals

UMES Preps For NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.- Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the 2010 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, hosted by Penn State University.

The Hawks will send seven men's runners and six women's runners to the meet as they continue their journey to the title race.  The women's 6-kilometer race begins at noon with the men's 10-kilometer following at 1:15 p.m.

Sophomore Basil Melek has led the UMES men all season and looks to continue his dominance on the course.  Most recently, he led the Hawks to a team second place finish with his individual fifth place finish in 25:04.80 at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships.

Joining Melek in the men's race are seniors Peter Sang and Amon Kiprotich in addition to junior Shadrack Maritim , sophomore Codjo Gbedo and freshmen Alonzo Jarmon and Shaquille Turner.

Junior Cynthia Anais and senior Eunice Jones are the continual leaders for the UMES women's squad and look to make an impact at the Regional.

Jones ran the best time of the season for the Lady Hawks at the MEAC Championship with a sixth place finish time of 18:37.30.  Anais finished first for the UMES women in six of their seven races of the year.

Joining Anais and Jones in the women's race is senior Jessica Abrantes, junior Melina Gallas and sophomores Emilie Ducados and Jennell Wade.

Spartan Men Run at NCAA XC Regional on Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State men's cross country team, fresh off its third straight MEAC title and 10th in the last 11 years, will run in the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional meet on Saturday morning in Louisville, Ky.

The 10,000-meter race is scheduled to go off at 11:15 a.m.

The Spartans are no stranger to the regional. They placed 18th out of 35 teams last season, and have twice finished in the top 12: the 2002 team finished 12th and the 2005 squad was eighth. NSU enters this year's regional ranked 11th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Region rankings.

This year's Southeast Regional consists of 40 teams. It is being hosted by the University of Louisville for the second consecutive season.

B-CU's Rono Headed to Cross Country Regional

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It's the end of the season and the beginning of a new phase of Kevin Rono's running career at Bethune-Cookman University.

Rono earned an individual berth to this weekend's NCAA South Cross County regional in Hoover, Ala., giving the Wildcats' their first-ever men's representation in the sport's post-season. The meet is hosted by Samford University and held at Hoover's Veterans Park, Nov. 13, starting at 10:45 a.m.

The field includes teams from the Southeastn Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team champion Florida A&M.

"The competition Kevin's facing will be strong," said B-CU Distance Coach Garon Jackson. "It's a great opportunity for Kevin and a beginning for him in a way."

One beginning is that this will be Rono's first attempt at running a ten kilometer (6.2 mile race). He's been training for the distance ever since the MEAC meet.
