Eagles Halt 45-Match Losing Streak To Morgan State

BALTIMORE -- Ashley Saunders had 19 kills and Coppin State ended a 45-match losing streak to Morgan State with a 25-19, 26-25, 25-21, 27-25 MEAC victory over the Bears on Sunday at Hill Field House.

It marked the Eagles first win against Morgan State since a forfeit victory over the Bears on Sept. 15, 1990. The Eagles also defeated Morgan State 3-2 on Sept. 8, 1990 at a tri-match at American University.

On Friday, Coppin State defeated Hampton 3-1 which snapped a 36-match conference losing streak and the Eagles put a cap on the week by beating Morgan State on Sunday.

Christina Epps had nine kills and three blocks, while Yolanda Reid added eight kills, five blocks and three digs for the Eagles.

Coppin State (5-19, 2-6 MEAC) placed three players in double figures in digs led by Tyler Phillips who had 19. Vanity Massey had 14 digs and Haley Beechler added 13 for the Eagles.

Dominique Bozier had 13 kills and Erin Cox added 12 kills and seven digs for Morgan State.

UMES Survives Five-Setter At Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. - Four players recorded double-digit kills led by freshmen Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa and Maline Vaitai with 18 apiece as Maryland Eastern Shore escaped Hampton's Holland Hall with a 3-2 (22-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-7) win over the Lady Pirates.

UMES dropped the first two games but engineered a strong rally to come from behind to take the match.

Junior Zoe Bowens had 13 kills and redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura added 10 to help UMES outhit Hampton, .259-.214. The win moves UMES to 18-10 and 7-1 in the MEAC, while Hampton falls to 6-22 and 2-6.

Vaitai also had 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Freshman Stephanie Sierra registered her eighth double-double of the year with 48 assists and 13 digs.

The Lady Pirates were led by Aaryn Harrison with 16 kills. Ivana Saput had 18 digs and Lihi Elkyam recorded 42 assists.

Howard Snaps Hornets' Win Streak 

Washington, DC (Oct. 31, 2010) -Delaware State volleyball team came up short in its bid for a five-match streak today. The Hornets fell to 3-games-to-2 at Burr Gymnasium this afternoon.

Howard won games one (25-16) and three (28-26), while the Hornets took games two (25-14) and four (25-14). The Bison claimed the victory with a 15-11 win in the decisive game five. Delaware State was hurt by six attack errors in the clinching game.

Freshman Jessica Croucher led DSU with 14 kills, while Erica Tajchman and Sarah Wheatcroft had 12 each. Tajchman, who surpassed the 1000-kill mark at Delaware State during the contest, also had a team-high 13 digs. Martina Ferrari recorded 36 assists and 13 digs for the Hornets.

Howard's Tosin Elebute led all players with 17 kills.

DSU is now 12-11 overall and 4-2 in the MEAC. Howard improved to 7-17 and 4-3.
