Volleyball Recap: Oct. 8

 

Lady Rattlers Route South Carolina State, 3-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Oct. 8)  - Florida A&M picked up their second MEAC win of the season as they defeated South Carolina state, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) Friday evening at the Alfred Lawson,  Jr., Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium.

FAMU (3-11, 2-0 MEAC) finished with a game high 42 kills, while SCSU (5-17, 0-1 MEAC) tallied 36.

The Lady Rattlers were led by Maria Ceccarelli with nine kills, followed by Katherine Huanec, Ashley Johnson, Pamela Barrera and Lorin Rucker, who all finished with seven kills each.  Dian Gonzalez led the team in assists with a game high 35, while Susan Egoavil finished with 11 digs.

SCSU had a quartet of players to finish with nine kills each in Desire Waller, Jarne Gleaton, Elizabeth Webb and Shabree Roberson.  Bria Brimmer led the team in assists with 34, while Melissa Robinson finished with 10 digs.

Hampton Falls in Four to Delaware State
HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton lost its first MEAC match of the season on Friday, as Delaware State won 3-1 (25-16, 27-29, 25-12, 25-18) in Holland Hall.

The Lady Hornets hit .116 as a team, thanks to 45 teams kills and 28 errors in 146 total attacks, while also holding a 10-2 edge in service aces. Delaware State hit a team-best .312 (14 kills, four errors in 32 attacks).

The Lady Pirates (4-17, 0-1 MEAC) had their three-match winning streak snapped after hitting .033 as a team with 31 kills and 26 errors in 152 attacks. Hampton hit a team-best .133 (14 kills, eight errors in 45 attacks) in the second set, a set in which the Lady Pirates erased an early 9-3 deficit and battled through 12 ties and six lead changes.

Delaware State (8-9, 1-0 MEAC) had nine kills and nine errors in the second set.

Hampton held a 9.0-6.0 edge in total blocks.

Freshman Sheileen Pagan led the Lady Pirates with 11 kills, hitting .281 in the match thanks to just two errors in 32 total attacks. Senior Aaryn Harrison added six kills; she is now 28 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.

Junior Mianna Armstrong and senior Ivana Suput each had one service ace.

Sarah Wheatcroft had a team-high 13 kills for Delaware State and accounted for 16.0 points, while Jessica Croucher added 11. Ashley Herman hit a team-best .222 (seven kills, three errors in 18 total attacks), while Martina Ferrari had a team-high four service aces.

Ferrari also recorded 33 of the Lady Hornets' 41 assists.

Spartans Waste Little Time in Downing N.C. A&T, 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. - It took slightly more than an hour, but Norfolk State wasted little time in dispatching North Carolina A&T Friday night, 3-0, at the Corbett Sports Center.

NSU used scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-14 to improve its record to 6-14 on the year and 1-1 in the MEAC. The Aggies dropped to 2-21 overall - their eighth loss in a row - and 0-1 after their first conference match of the season.

Sophomore Charlotte Armstead easily led all players with 15 kills, while redshirt sophomore Paige Gary-Canty and sophomore Ellica Morris added seven kills apiece. Junior Nicole Kessner handed out 33 assists, while freshman Noelle Eagles totaled 11 digs and five service aces.

The Aggies were led by Tatiana Cooper with five kills and Amber Inman, who had team highs with 14 assists and five digs.

Hawks Win Sixth Straight; Top Morgan State, 3-0

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Junior Zoe Bowens led all players with 13 kills and three others had 10 as Maryland Eastern Shore defeated Morgan State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-23), at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Friday.

Reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week Maline Vaitai collected her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs while fellow freshman Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa and redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura each had 10 kills for UMES 12-9, 1-0 MEAC).

The win for the Hawks is their sixth consecutive and 11th in 13 games. Morgan State drops to 2-14 and 0-1 in conference play.

Cox paced the Lady Bears with nine kills and Dina Beamon had 30 assists. Cheryl Savoy tallied a match-high 14 digs.

North Carolina Central Tops Bethune-Cookman 3-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Two North Carolina Central  (6-18) student-athletes recorded double-digit digs to anchor an Eagle defense that held Bethune-Cookman University (4-17) to a .136 hitting percentage Friday night in volleyball action at Moore Gymnasium as NCCU earned its second-straight win, 3-1.

NCCU took charge as they claimed the first two sets of the match. With a two sets to none lead, NCCU allowed Bethune-Cookman to crawl back into the match as the Lady Wildcats took set three. The Eagles closed the match with a set four win, as they defeated the Lady Wildcats by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 10-25 and 25-23.

Senior Belinda Behncke-Biney continued to dominate on the offensive side of the ball for the Eagles as she notched her fourth 20-plus kill outing with a match-high 20 kills, marking her 15th double-digit kill performance of the season. She recorded just seven errors, while adding nine digs and a service ace.

Adding nine kills to the mix was junior Maritsann Sinclair, who also contributed four digs. Setting up the powerful Eagle offense was freshman Jzima-Malaki Kalao, who earned her second double-double of the season with 39 assists and a team-high 12 digs. She also accounted for two of the Eagles' three solo blocks.

Lady Wildcat junior Jessica Wilson led the way for Bethune-Cookman with a team-high 14 kills, while contributing nine digs. Krysta Gardner followed with eight kills, while Kaiyana Johnson had seven. Pacing the Wildcat offense was freshman setter Alexis Bliese with 35 dishes and two service aces on the day.

Their defense was anchored by the pair of Jennifer Jimenez and Jacqueline Woodyear with 13 digs apiece. On the net, Bethune-Cookman totaled six blocks with Johnson leading the way with four, including three solo. The senior middle blocker served as the Lady Cats' major blocking threat.

Bethune-Cookman dropped to 4-17 on the season, while NCCU improved to 6-18 and won its second consecutive match of the season.
