Kessner's Highlight Night Not Enough in 3-2 Loss to S.C. State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Junior Nicole Kessner posted a triple-double and set the school record for career assists, but the Norfolk State volleyball team was unable to complete the comeback in a 3-2 loss to South Carolina State Wednesday night.

Kessner totaled 26 assists on the night at Dukes Gymnasium to give her 1,972 assists for her career, moving past Solange Honore, who previously held the school's top mark with 1,971.

NSU rallied after dropping the first two sets by 25-20 scores. The Spartans took the third set, 25-23, and the fourth set, 25-21, before the Bulldogs took care of business in the fifth set, 15-9.

The loss dropped NSU to 4-2 in the MEAC South Division and into a tie with the Bulldogs, who upped their MEAC mark to 4-2 and their overall record to 11-20. NSU fell to 10-17 overall.

Kessner also had a team- and career-high 13 kills and finished the triple-double with 10 digs. It marked the first triple-double by an NSU player since Shea Kersey had 10 kills, 11 digs and 13 assists against Delaware State on Oct. 15, 2005.

Upstate Defeats Aggies At Home

GREENSBORO - Even though the North Carolina A&T volleyball team lost to S.C. Upstate 3-0 (25-10, 16, 16) Wednesday night at Corbett Sports Center, the Aggies received some positive signs from players who have not been in the forefront this season.

Freshmen Murphye Williams and Devonte' Reese put in some valuable time off the bench for the Aggies against the Spartans. Reese stepped in and had three kills, four digs and a block in two games played. Williams added a kill, dig and a block to give the Aggies more depth than they have had most of the season.

Mia Gray led the Aggies with five kills, four service aces, five digs and one block. Katie Downey and Morgan Thomas led the Spartans with eight kills apiece. Cori Harris added six kills and 12 digs.
