MEAC Cross Country Championships Set for This Weekend

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host the 2010 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 30 at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland.


Norfolk State, the reigning MEAC men's cross country champion, will compete for its 10th conference title in 11 years. The Spartans are currently ranked 15th in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Region Poll and have won three races this season. Junior Josef Tessema has paced NSU with three individual titles this season and leads the MEAC with a time of 24:47.80 on an 8K course.

On the women's side, Norfolk State will vie for its second straight crown.  Sophomore Kellen Rutto has led the NSU women's team to four top five finishes this season. She earned an individual title with a time of 19:31.75 at the UMES Lid-Lifter Invite.

Another highlight for the women's race is Maryland Eastern Shore junior Cynthia Anais. Anais posted the fastest 5K time this season in 18:45.50 at the UMES Cappy Anderson Invite.

The 2010 MEAC Cross Country Championships will begin with the women's five-kilometer race at 9:45 a.m. followed by the men's eight-kilometer race at 10:30 a.m.  

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, MEAC cross country participants will compete with pink colored racing bibs and MEAC head coaches will wear pink ribbons. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is located on One Backbone Road in Princess Anne, Maryland. The cross country championships are free and open to the public.
