SC State Defeats Nine-Time MEAC Champion Florida A&M , 3-2

Lady Bulldog Snaps FAMU's Win Streak for the Second Time in Two Years

Orangeburg, S.C.--For the second time in two years, SC State has snapped a MEAC  win streak by nine-time defending champion Florida A&M. The Lady Bulldogs today defeated the Lady Rattlers, 3-2, (25-20, 22-25, 25-13, 13-25, 15-11) in front of 338 fans at Dukes Gymnasium on the campus of SC State.

On October 17, 2008, the Lady Bulldogs snapped what was then a 98 regular season conference match streak for the Lady Rattlers. Tonight the victory ended a 16 game regular season conference match win streak. With win SC State improves to 9-20 overall and 2-2 in the conference while FAMU drops to 6-12 overall and 4-1 in the MEAC.

It was a team effort led by the lone senior Jarne Gleaton who put down a game-high 21 kills. The Lady Bulldogs had three players to record double-digit kills as Shabree Roberson recorded 16; E. Paige Webb recorded 10. SC State was led defensively by Webb and Melissa Robinson who picked up 15 and 10 digs respectively. Junior setter Bria Brimmer had a game high 47 set assists.

Katherine Huanec and Maria Ceccarelli led the Lady Rattlers offensively with 18 and 10 kills respectively. Susan Egoavil had 16 digs for the Lady Rattlers in the loss.

UMES Earns Sweep Of Howard On Senior Day

Hawks win 10 straight overall, 35th in conference and 14th at home Friday  

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman Maline Vaitai recorded a match-high 11 kills and six service aces as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's volleyball team won its 10th straight match, defeating Howard, 3-0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-20), on Senior Day at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Friday.

The win for UMES (16-9, 5-0 MEAC) stretches its NCAA-leading conference winning streak to 35 matches while also marking the Hawks' 14th straight victory at the Hytche Center, a number which was tied for 13th nationally coming into play against the Bison.

UMES hit .312 (36-11-80) versus Howard (4-17, 1-3), paced by a .400 performance from junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.). Bowens collected nine kills on 20 attacks with just one error and also threw in another six aces. UMES limited the Bison to .090 from the floor with 25 kills and 18 errors on 78 attacks.

Coming into the match as the NCAA leader in aces per set at 2.16, UMES tallied 13 more aces to pace the win.

In her final match at the Hytche Center, redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura had six kills in 13 swings with just one error, hitting .385.

Junior Rebecca Prado and freshman Jingqiao Li contributed 12 and 10 digs, respectively, for a UMES defense that had 34. Sophomore Stephanie Sierra  also had 37 assists.

Hornets Defeat Eagles 25-14, 25-19, 25-16

BALTIMORE -- Erica Tajchman had eight kills and six Delaware State players had at least five kills as the Hornets defeated Coppin State 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 on Friday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match in the Physical Education Complex.

Tajchman added five digs and hit .429 for the match to lead the Hornets to the victory.

Ashley Saunders and Vanity Massey had five kills each to lead Coppin State, while Yolanda Reid added four kills for the Eagles. Saunders also paced Coppin State with 11 digs.

Delaware State (10-10, 3-1 MEAC) hit .262 for the match and had more kills, digs, blocks and service aces than the Eagles.

Coppin State (3-18, 0-5 MEAC) dropped its fifth consecutive match and reached the halfway point of the MEAC season with a 0-5 league record.

 LadyCats Capture Road Win Over NCCU in Five

DURHAM, N.C. - The LadyCats of Bethune-Cookman collected the win in five sets over North Carolina Central, winning the first, second, and then the tiebreaker 15-12.

The LadyCats opened strong, hitting .407 as a team, and building up a solid lead by mid-set over the Lady Eagles. Holding a three-point advantage late in the set, the LadyCats put down the kill stroke, launching an 8-2 scoring run, which included six kills for B-CU, to take the opening set win, 25-16.

Leading three LadyCats in double-figures for the kill department, Jessica Wilson registered a career-high 19 kills in the victory, hitting .333. Kaiyana Johnson only found errors in two attacks to hit .381 and collect 10 kills, while Linda Nwabuko also grabbed 10, including 2 of the LadyCats' 6 blocks. Alexis Bliese led the setters with 32 assists, while defense was truly a team effort, with four players over 5 digs, led by Jacqueline Woodyear with 12.

The LadyCats (6-20) continue their road trip in North Carolina, facing off in a rematch with North Carolina A&T, Sunday in Greensboro. B-CU looks to keep the momentum going, after dominating NC A&T at Moore Gym, 3-0, including a 25-9 match finale.

SSU Volleyball Sweeps Fla. Memorial Lady Lions

Miami, Fla.-Savannah State  ended a 13 game losing streak by sweeping the Lady Lions of Florida Memorial,  3-0 (25-9, 25-23, 25-17) in the A. Chester Robinson recreation center.

Defensively, the Lady Tigers dominated the game, registering a total of six team blocks, while libero Kaneisha Hamilton led the game in digs with 10.

Veteran players Jennifer Lowe, Ashlee Butler, and Keandra Lewis each registered a game high of three service aces for SSU. Lowe also led the team in kills with six, while Butler recorded a game high of 15 assists.

FMU's Janice Valies earned the game high of nine kills.
