Taisja Jones topped all players with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Kent State to a 57-48 win over Delaware State in women's college basketball Sunday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center.
The Lady Hornets dropped their 12th straight game to fall to 1-12, while the Golden Flashes snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 7-5.
Jones was five-for-seven from the field and 14-of-14 at the free throw line for Kent State. Jamilah Humes (4-4 FGs) added nine points for the Flashes.
Selena Galloway was the only Delaware State player in double-figures with 11 points. Alex Stewart added nine points, while Tonya Clark had a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
Delaware State hit just 6-of-26 first half shots (23.1%), and trailed 31-15 at the break. Kent State was 12-for-22 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
The Lady Hornets scored the first six points of the second half, and pulled to within 31-22 on a lay up by Stewart with 16:39 left to play. A lay-up off an offensive rebound by Clark cut Kent's lead to 33-26 two minutes later.
Galloway hit two free throws with 8:59 left to pull Delaware State to within 43-35 before the Golden Flashes pulled away for good.
Jones capped off a 10-0 Kent State run with two free throws to give her team a 53-35 lead with 4:24 remaining to play.
Delaware State responded with an 11-0 run in the last three minutes, and cut Kent State's advantage to 55-48 on two free throws by Clark with 29 seconds left in the game.
The Lady Hornets won the rebound battle, collecting 34 boards to 26 for the Golden Flashes. DSU also forced Kent State to commit 21 turnovers, four more than the Hornets.
Delaware State will return to action this Saturday (Jan. 9) at home against Winston-Salem State. Game time is 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The DSU/Winston-Salem State men's game will follow the women's contest.
