Lady Hornets Fall to the Lady Pirates, 62-43

Dover, Del. (Jan. 30, 2010) --- Quanneisha Perry scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Hampton Pirates (9-10, 5-3 MEAC) to a 62-43 victory over the Delaware State Hornets on Saturday at Memorial Hall in Dover.

Sophomore guard Alexis Abraham was the high scorer for the red and blue, picking up 10 points, and senior center Alex Stewart notched eight points and six rebounds for DSU (3-17, 1-6 MEAC).

The Pirates controlled the action from the opening tip, starting the game with a 14-2 run, and led the contest from wire to wire.  Hampton controlled the first half by winning the battle on the glass, outrebounding DSU 25-12, including a 10-4 advantage on the offensive boards.  The Pirates would head to intermission shooting 15-32 from the floor, including 4-6 for 10 points by sophomore guard Bernadette Fortune.  Abraham was the standout for the Hornets, leading the home team with seven points and three rebounds.

A Kianna D'Oliveira layup with 17:25 to play would cut the Hampton advantage to 16, but DSU would be able to no closer.  Fortune would finish the contest with 16 points, and Jericka Jenkins picked up 13 points and six assists for Hampton.  Senior Brittany Washington would come off the bench for seven second-half points for the Hornets on 3-6 shooting.

Howard Hangs Tough; Posts Victory Over UMES, 55-51

PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - Saadia Doyle bested her career high with 32 points and posted her 13th double-double of the year as Howard (9-10, 5-3 MEAC) beat Maryland Eastern Shore 55-51 at the Hytche Athletic Center on a snowy Saturday afternoon.

With the Bison up a pair on the scoreboard, Doyle and Zykia Brown combined to help Howard ink five of eight free-throw attempts with 2:36 remaining.

Two minutes elapsed on the scoreboard when HU led again by two and Doyle was fouled as she drove the ball up the court. With 15 seconds left, Doyle made one of two free-throws and UMES guard Casey Morton's 3-point attempt with seven seconds left bounced off the rim.

Doyle finished 16-of-22 at the free-throw line, salvaging the Bison's 19-of-28 go of it at the line. Howard had a tough shooting night all around, finishing at only 30.8 percent from the field. After trailing by three points at halftime and allowing four blocks the opening stanza, the Bison limited UMES' second-chance opportunities.

Doyle and Brown, who had 22 points, were the only players that finished with double-figure scoring totals for HU.

The Lady Hawks, which dropped to 7-10 (4-3 MEAC) with the loss, were paced by Chelsea Sanders' 17 points. April McBride posted 10 points and 10 rebounds and Adobi Agbasi added 10 boards.

Florida A&M Tops Winston-Salem State, 67-55

TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-18) gave a great effort, but could not muster enough in a 67-55 loss at Florida A&M, Saturday evening. Though the Lady Rams scored at least 50 points in the third straight game, the team couldn't match a balanced Florida A&M team in the road loss.

Putting points on the scoreboard was not problem for the Lady Rams as the team shot a 35.6% from the field, an impressive percentage for a road game. However, the Lady Rams struggled with 26 total turnovers in the loss. Individually, three Lady Rams managed to break into double-digit scoring in the game. Junior guard Rene Rector led the WSSU effort with a team-high 14 points off the bench in the game. Fellow juniors Vontisha Woods and MaLisa Bumpus added 11 points each. Woods completed the double-double effort with 11 rebounds as well.

The Lady Rams struggled in the game's early going, falling into a 12-5 deficit with just over 13 minutes left to play. After falling behind by as many as nine points, the Lady Rams were able to battle back midway through the first half when a 5-2 WSSU run pulled the Lady Rams within two points of the Lady Rattlers. It was a pair of free throws by junior guard Nikki Kee that capped the run. With the game within reach, the Lady Rams kept the pressure on the home team trailing 34-30 at the half.

The second half turned out to be another story however, as the Lady Rams were outscored 33-25. Allowing six unanswered points to the Lady Rattlers, the Lady Rams fell into their largest deficit to that point, trailing 40-30 with just over 17 minutes left to play. The Lady Rams were able to keep the game within reach, but an 11-3 FAMU run left the Lady Rams trailing 56-38 midway through the half and put the game out of reach. The Lady Rams continued to battle, however, ending the night the 67-55 loss.
