BOWIE, Md.- Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) went 10-0 at the Lady Bulldog Classic to claim first place. The win follows another first place victory the weekend before when the Lady Hawks won the Mid-Winter Classic in Arkansas.
Martha Perez was also the star for the second straight week. Perez earned her second straight All-Tournament Team selection while posting a 213 average over five games and tallying 1,065 pins. Good enough for second place individually. She was joined on the squad by Maria Rodriguez , who rebounded after a rough outing last week, to total 1,043 pins, average 208.6 and finish fourth overall. Paula Vilas also stayed hot, tallying 1,008 pins and averaging 201.6 to take the 10th overall spot.
Perez led the way for no. 2 UMES (66-18) with a high game of 278, the best of her collegiate career. The team posted 13 games of 200 or better of a possible 25. Vilas tallied a 226 and 247, Kristina Frahm posted a 200, 204 and 223, Anggie Ramirez posted a 202, 220 and a 203 while Perez tallied her 278 and 222 while Rodriguez put up a 215, 245 and a 207.
In those team games UMES topped Lincoln (Pa.) (1073-713), North Carolina A&T (1077-803), no. 10 Saint Francis (N.Y.) (992-927), Saint Paul's (979-809) and Winston-Salem State (940-664).
In Baker games the Lady Hawks rolled through Howard (788-682), Florida A&M (822-761), Elizabeth City State (875-653), no. 11 Adelphi (846-786) and St. Peter's (867-677).
Over the two days, UMES posted 10 wins to no losses and accumulated 9,259 pins. They were 618 pins better than second place Adelphi and 780 better than the Rattlers of FAMU in third place. No. 20 Morgan State, St. Francis (N.Y.), Saint Peter's, no. 19 Norfolk State, Hampton, Bowie State and NCAT rounded out the top ten teams.
UMES now heads to the Kutztown Invite in Kutztown, Pa. January 30-31, 2010.
