GREENSBORO - Despite having a team with three freshmen and two sophomores, the Aggies played well against a good Division I program. The Aggies even took two points from the Pirates with wins by No. 5 singles player Nina Henry and No. 6 Azeib Nigatu.
"We've been working hard,'' said Dunwoody. We've been getting up at 5 a.m., running and playing each other for weeks. Today, it was good to get out and play someone else for a change. And I'm very pleased with what I saw."
The Aggies had three matches go to a third set. Nigatu and Henry both won their third sets 6-4. All-MEAC performer Winnie Quick wasn't so lucky. Quick took the first set against Jessica Cook 6-3. Quick was ahead 5-3 in the second set before Cook broke her serve to get to within one. Cook then tied the match at five before breaking Quick's serve again to go ahead by one.
Quick returned the favor to tie the match before Cook won the match thanks to an unforced error by Quick. Cook took the third set 6-1.
"This year I'm going to go back to what I did when I was younger,'' said Quick. "I'm going to charge the net more to put more pressure on my opponents. It work for me today, she just played a great third set."
The Aggies play again Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Elon on the road. They then return home on Sunday, January 24 to play Appalachian State at noon.
