Lady Wildcats Hold Off UMES For 56-55 Victory
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats faced a heavy defensive struggle at Moore Gymnasium, early Monday afternoon, as the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore came to town. However, the Lady Wildcats focused and put away their free throws in crunch time, topping UMES by just one point, holding off the Lady Hawks on their final possession and grabbing the win, 56-55.
In the first half, B-CU scored with only three seconds ticked away on the very first possession, looking more like a shootout than a defensive battle. However, once both teams got their early licks in on offense, the defenses took hold and the score became a one possession game for the entirety of the first half. Four ties and five lead changes showed the tale of the struggle as each team battled for just a little breathing room. Both teams took advantage of the transition game, with UMES putting eight away on fast breaks, while B-CU tallied six. However, UMES was also earning points off turnovers to keep the game knotted up. UMES broke out of a tie with only seconds remaining to close the half on top, getting a quick fast break layup to lead 23-21 at the half.
The second half played out in similar fashion in the early going, but B-CU got on track offensively with just under fourteen minutes on the clock, making the game's first true scoring run, pushing it to 11-0, to take an eight-point lead near the midpoint of the half. The Lady Wildcats spent the remainder of the half fighting off the Lady Hawks, and using their momentum, in addition to an enthusiastic home crowd, focus on setting the offense and taking good shots. With seven minutes remaining, UMES began to knot up the score again and neither team could move beyond a single-possession advantage. With just :48 left in the game, B-CU took a three-point lead on free throws, but UMES answered quickly to be down just one.
