SC State Cruises Easily 87-65 in MEAC Play over Coppin St.
ORANGEBURG, SC-Senior All-MEAC guard/forward Jason Flagler poured in 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while JUCO transfer Darnell Porter tossed in 25 along with eight rebounds to lead SC State to an 87-65 victory over Coppin State Monday.
Porter hit an impressive 6-7 from the 3-point range on the night, along with Flagler's 11-12 from the field in the victory.
SC State jumped out early 15-5 off steal by Carrio Bennett and a layup by Darnell Porter at the 14:45 mark. Coppin State cut the lead to three, 25-22 on a tip-in by Sam Coleman with 7:56 left in the first-half.
A 3-pointer by Porter followed by a Jason Flagler layup closed out the half to give the Bulldogs an eight point lead, 40-32.
SC State's Darnell Porter led all scorers at half-time with 12 points, followed by Jason Flagler with 11.

Abrams Powers Wildcats to comeback win over UMES
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Maryland-Eastern Shore came to play Monday on Martin Luther King Day in Daytona Beach. UMES jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first nine minutes and led by as many as 13 points in the first half (26-13) with 4:12 to play.
C. J. Reed sparked the B-CU offense in the final four minutes of the half and the Wildcats closed to within 28-24 at the intermission. Reed scored 13 points in the first half keying an 11-2 scoring run to end the first half.
Junior center Albert Abrahams led the Bethune-Cookman second half comeback scoring 12 of his 18 points, 10 rebounds double-double to key the conference home win over the Hawks. B-CU out-scored UMES 39-23 in the second half and two big stick-backs by Abrahams and a three-point play inside gave the 'Cats a seven point cushion (48-41) with nine minutes to play.
"He is a difference maker, Albert (Abrahams) is a game-changer," said B-CU Head Coach Cliff Reed. "Other than C. J. (Reed) teams should have to scheme and take away his inside play. And the way he played today is what we need from him for us to be successful."

Hornets Top Florida A&M for Fourth Straight Win
Tallahassee, Fla. - Delaware State made the most of its first visit to Florida A&M's new Al Lawson Center, using a late surge to defeat the Rattlers 64-57 in a MEAC match-up Monday evening. The Hornets have won their last four games, the team's longest streak since winning nine in a row during the 2006-07 season. DSU is now 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC. Florida A&M has lost three straight to fall to 3-14 and 1-4.
Marcus Neal and Chad Wilson led four Delaware State players in double figures with 13 points each. Jay Threatt and Frisco Sandidge added 10 each for the Hornets.
The game featured nine ties and seven lead changes.
The Hornets led by as many as 10 points in the first half, and held a 35-28 lead at the break.

Morgan State Buries Rams in Second Half, 84-65
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Morgan States' play in the second half fueled the Bears to an 84-65 victory over Winston-Salem State on Monday night at the C.E. Gaines Center.
Morgan State's (12-7, 4-0 MEAC) defense improved after halftime as the Bears forced turnovers and limited the Rams into shooting difficult shots. Winston-Salem State's shooting dropped from 53.6 percent (15-28) in the first half to 36.7 percent shooting in the second half.
Reggie Holmes, the nation's No. 6 leading scorer (22.5 ppg), scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half for the Bears. Holmes shot 6-of-13 from the field and was 9-of-11 from the stripe.
Kevin Thompson, the nation's No. 4 leading rebounder (12.7 rpg), collected his 12th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. DeWayne Jackson finished with 11 points and Robney Stokes chipped in 10.
It was a see-saw affair throughout most of the first half. The teams each shot 53 percent from the field and there were 10 lead changes and nine ties.
Morgan State gained control of the ballgame just before the break by outscoring the Rams 24-14 inside the paint and converting on fast break opportunities to give the Bears a 40-35 halftime lead.

Pirates Drop North Carolina A&T
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Hampton University men's basketball team stopped its two-game MEAC skid on Monday night, beating North Carolina A&T 65-55 at the Corbett Sports Center.
The Pirates never trailed, and the Aggies never got any closer than eight points behind - trailing 61-53 with 32 seconds remaining, when Thomas Coleman slammed home a dunk. But the Pirates made all six free throws in the final 41 seconds to hold off the Aggies - Brandon Tunnell, Kwame Morgan and Darrion Pellum each icing the game in the closing seconds.
Hampton led by as many as 15 in the second half, when Pellum hit a jumper with 13:08 to play to put the Pirates up 51-36. North Carolina A&T responded with an 8-2 run to cut the score to 53-44 with 9:11 to play on a Tavarus Alston layup.
Morgan led four Pirates in double figures with a season-high 13 points on 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. Michael Freeman scored 11 points to go along with 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season, while Charles Funches and Pellum each added 10 points.
The Pirates shot 42.0 percent (21-for-50) from the floor, while also making 18 of their 22 free throws. Hampton also out-rebounded the Aggies 42-29.
The Pirates (5-12, 2-3 MEAC) also got 24 points from their bench.

Thompson Leads Balanced Attack in Howard's Win over Norfolk State
NORFOLK, VA. - Calvin Thompson continued his scoring barrage, erupting for a game-high 24 points to lead four players in double figures as Howard University defeated Norfolk State University, 82-77 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Echols Hall. The game was televised nationally on ESPNU as part of the MEAC/ESPNU television package.
A 6-3 sophomore guard from New Orleans, LA, Thompson connected on 7 of 11 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free throw line. Coming off a career-high 33-point effort against North Carolina A&T on Saturday, the MEAC Player of the Week carried the streak over by scoring the Bison's first 11 points in a nip-and-tuck affair that featured 8 ties and 16 lead changes in the first 20 minutes.
With the Norfolk State defense focusing its attention on Thompson, the Bison turned to freshman Dadrian Collins, who tallied 10 first half points. The Spartans (3-13 overall, 2-3 in the MEAC) countered on the scoring of Rob Hampton and Kyle O'Quinn who combined for 15 points. Howard (5-14 overall, 4-1 in the MEAC) led, 33-32 at the half.
