Thompson scores career high in Win over NC A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Calvin Thompson poured in a career-high 33 points and Curtis White added 18 to lead Howard to an 82-77 win over North Carolina A&T at the Corbett Sports Center.

A 6-3, 175-pound sophomore guard from New Orleans, Thompson connected on 9 of 15 from the floor, including 3 of 5 from three-point range to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. He set the tone early for the Bison by tallying 21 points in the first half of a 7 of 8 shooting performance as Howard (4-14 overall, 3-1 in the MEAC) shot a season-best 67 percent from the floor.

White, a 6-4 senior guard from Indianapolis, IN, tallied 11 of his 18 points in the first 20 minutes, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the stripe.

The Aggies (5-12 overall, 1-3 in the MEAC) shot the ball well, hitting on 50 percent (15 of 30) in the first half but they could not keep up with the hot shooting of Thompson and White.

Post Play and Fast Break Offense Too Much for Eagles as Rams Roll

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Home, sweet home. The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team used 30 points in the paint and 11 fast break points to roll past the Eagles of Coppin State on Saturday afternoon en route to improving to 4-1 inside the friendly confines of the C.E. Gaines Center as WSSU downed CSU 55-42 in front of a near sellout crowd.

Though the Rams led the contest wire-to-wire, the two teams would start the contest with neither team wanting to assume control as Winston-Salem State and Coppin State combined to miss the first 19 shots as WSSU missed 11 consecutive field goals and CSU misfired on eight straight field goals over the first 4:35 of play.

However, a pair of layups, a scoring-drought-ending one by Brandon Hobbs and one by Andrew Jackson, combined with an earlier free throw from junior forward Paul Davis, put the Rams ahead 5-0 less than one minute later as WSSU jumped out to a lead that they would not surrender the rest of the way.

Spartan Defense Keys 66-50 Win over Hampton

NORFOLK, Va. - Michael Deloach scored a game-high 15 points, and the Norfolk State defense held Hampton to 29 percent shooting in a 66-50 Spartans' win on Saturday before 4,550 fans at Echols Hall.

The win was the second in a row for the Spartans (3-12, 2-2). Hampton drops to 4-12, 1-3.

The Spartans used a 17-2 run midway through the first half to take control. Hampton missed nine of its 10 shots and had six turnovers during that stretch. The Pirates connected on just 8-of-30 (27 percent) from the floor during the half and trailed 33-22.

Bears Edge S.C. State to Remain Unbeaten, 72-67EARS EDGE S.C. STATE TO REMAIN UNBEATEN, 72-67

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - It was a tough night for Reggie Holmes. Morgan State's senior guard, who entered tonight's contest among the top scorers in the nation (5th - 23.7 ppg), finished the game without a single field goal.

But tonight the Bears proved they can get it done even when their leading scorer is having an off night.

Morgan State freshman DeWayne Jackson scored a game-high 19 points and sophomore Kevin Thompson added 14 points and 20 rebounds to help the Bears pull out a 72-67 win Saturday night at the S-H-M Memorial Center in Orangeburg, S.C.

Jackson led the Bears with 11 points during a 21-2 run and Troy Smith hit a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 51-40 lead with 11:38 remaining in the half. Morgan State never trailed from the point forward.

"At halftime coach told us that we needed to step it up and play our game," explained DeWayne Jackson. "He asked us what we wanted to do and we knew we had to get the win. I felt like I had to become a leader (in a way) once I saw that Reggie's shots weren't falling."

Hawks Snap Seven-Game Losing Streak with Win at FAMU, 67-51

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Sean Berry registered his second double-double of the season as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball defeated Florida A&M, 67-51, at the Al Lawson Center Saturday night.

Berry scored 10 and grabbed 11 rebounds in 24 minutes of play. Three other Hawks tallied in double digits with senior Neal Pitt scoring 15 and juniors Tim Burns and Kevin White each had 12.

The win was the first for the Hawks on the road this season and their first since December 9, 2009, when they defeated Navy at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES had not won a conference road game since March 3, 2007 at Howard. Additionally, the Hawks had lost eight straight in Tallahassee.

UMES got off to a quick start, leading 11-4 going into the first media timeout of the game. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley knocked down a 3-pointer at the 11:22 mark, to continue his streak of making a 3-pointer in every game this season.

A jumper by Pitt put the Hawks up by 16 at 24-8, with just under 10 minutes left in the half. A missed basket by Burns turned into a rebounded tip-in by Berry to make things 28-12. Free throws by Pitt put UMES up by 20, their largest lead of the game.

The Rattlers pulled the game within 13 at 33-20 with a layup by Amin Stevens at the buzzer going into half time.
