Slow Second Half Costs Lady Rams in 48-38 Loss to Coppin State
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-14) were outmuscled in a 48-38 loss to the Coppin State Lady Eagles (5-9, 1-2 MEAC), Saturday afternoon.
Offensively, the Lady Rams and Lady Eagles posted nearly identical numbers with each team taking 50 shots in the game and Coppin State holding an 18-14 edge over the Lady Rams in shots made. The two teams posted similar rebounding numbers as well with Coppin State taking a 41-37 advantage over the Lady Rams on the boards as well. The slight differences turned out to be the difference in the game with Coppin State holding on for the 10-point victory.
As a team, the Lady Rams struggled to find points, shooting 28.0% from the field and scoring under 40 points for the fourth time in their last five games. WSSU junior forward Vontisha Woods continued to push the Lady Rams with a team-high eight points and eight rebounds in the game. The junior guard tandem of MaLisa Bumpus and Nikki Kee both added six points each in the loss.

Lady Bears Hold Off Host South Carolina State, 82-75
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Jan. 16, 2010)-Morgan State regrouped from its disappointing 37-point loss at Hampton on Monday night by defeating host South Carolina State, following an 82-75 victory in a MEAC game on Saturday evening at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Morgan State (6-9, 3-1 MEAC), which now trails in the series, 32-22, has won sixth straight over the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bears' 3-1 conference mark is the program's best start since the 1999-2000 season.
Corin Adams quickly rebounded from her season-low nine-point performance Monday night at Hampton and scored 23 of her game-high and career-tying 32 points in the first half to lead four Morgan State players in double figures in scoring. Adams finished the game shooting 11-of-19 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Fellow starter Brittany Noel added 11 points. Kristina Rosario came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while fellow reserve Erin Hawkins also scored 11 points.
South Carolina State was led by Joi Walker, who came off the bench and finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs. Wiley added 13 points and Sophilia Hipps chipped in with 10 points.

Lady Aggies Shoot Their Way To Victory Over Howard
GREENSBORO, January 16, 2010 - Senior Ta'Wuana Cook had a career-high 29 points and junior forward Jaleesa Sams added 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team to a 79-69 win over Howard Saturday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center.
The Aggies improved to 9-7 on the season and 4-0 in the MEAC. But the victory did not come without a challenge from Howard. The Bison trailed by as many as 19 in the first half. The Bison used rebounding and slashes to the basket to get back into the game. When Portia Deterville hit two free throws seven minutes into the second half the Aggies lead had been sliced to one, 48-47.
The Aggies began to play defense, got out in transition and passed the ball well. Lamona Smalley scored six points and dished out two assists during a 12-4 run that gave the Aggies a 60-51 lead with 9:16 remaining. The Bison could not get any closer than seven the rest of the way.
Howard dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the MEAC. Freshman Saadia Doyle led the Bison with 29 points and 14 rebounds. The Aggies have not lost at home against a conference opponent since 2007.

Late Rally Comes Up Short For Lady Hornets
Daytona Beach, Fla. (Jan. 16, 2010) --- Delaware State cut a 10-point second half deficit to two before some late defensive lapses in a 70-62 MEAC loss to Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gym this afternoon. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Lady Hornets, who fell to 3-13 overall and 1-2 in the MEAC. The Wildcats won for the second time in three games to improve to 6-9 and 2-1.
Delaware State led 30-28 at the half, but fell behind 48-38 on a basket by Bethune-Cookman's Jasmine Bugg with 9:53 left to play. The Wildcats led 52-42 before Selena Galloway sparked a Delaware State rally. Galloway scored the game's next eight points, including two three-point baskets, and pulled the Lady Hornets to within 52-50 on a three with 5:24 remaining in the game.
Bethune-Cookman answered by scoring on its next five possessions, and opened up a 64-57 lead on a three-point play by Euneshia Proctor with 2:40 left in the contest.
The Lady Hornets could get no closer than six the rest of the way.

Lady Pirates Squeak Past NSU In OT
NORFOLK, Va. - It took an extra five minutes, but Hampton defeated Norfolk State 63-59 on Saturday evening at Echols Hall. Junior Laura Lewis scored six of her eight points in overtime.
After Whitney Long opened overtime with a 3-pointer to give the Lady Spartans a 56-53 lead, Lewis hit a mid-range jumper and Quanneisha Perry followed with a layup to put Hampton up 57-56. Lewis would sink another jumper and hit a free throw in the closing seconds to pull the Lady Pirates (6-9, 2-2 MEAC) out of reach.
Marian Brooks sank a layup with 3.6 seconds to play to tie the game at 53, and Bernadette Fortune missed a long jumper at the buzzer that would've given the Lady Pirates the win in regulation.
Perry led the Lady Pirates with a season-high 23 points on 9-for-23 shooting and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Freshman Breanna Jones added 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting and nine rebounds. Hampton shot 30.0 percent (24-for-80) from the floor, only committing 10 turnovers and out-rebounding Norfolk State 49-46.
Tyisha Bridges led Norfolk State with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while Long added 14. Brooks pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. The Lady Spartans shot 40.4 percent (23-for-57) from the floor and committed 25 turnovers.

UMES WOMEN HOLD OFF LADY RATTLERS, 47-43
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Jan. 16) - April McBride's jumper and a pair of free throws by Casey Morton in the final 33 seconds lifted the
Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks past the FAMU Lady Rattlers, 47-43 in MEAC basketball action in the Al Lawson
Center Saturday night.
FAMU (9-5, 2-2 in MEAC) and UMES (5-7, 3-0 in MEAC) struggled to score most of the game, as the two clubs played to a 14-14 halftime deadlock thanks to ice cold shooting in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Lady Rattlers shot 20.8 percent (5 of 24) and went 2 of 8 (25-percent) from long range, while the Lady Hawks managed to hit 20
percent from the floor (6 of 30) and cashed in just one of nine 3-point tries in the opening half.
UMES outscored FAMU, 33-29 in the second half, thanks to the final four points scored by McBride and Morton.
Antonia Bennett led FAMU with 12 points, while LaShonda Gaines finished with 10 points. Deidra Jones added nine points and Qiana Donald pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
UMES had three players score in double figures, led by McBride with 14 points and nine rebounds, Chena Parker with 13 points while Morton added 12 points. Amber Cook also pulled down nine boards for UMES.
