A New Hornet Backcourt Superb in Rout of Bulldogs

DOVER, Del. -  Chad Wilson had scored just three points all season, and Brandon Baylor was playing in his first ever game for the Hornets, having just been declared eligible this weekend.  But they combined to score 30 points on 11-17 shooting to lead Delaware State to a 67-58 win over South Carolina State on Monday night at Memorial Hall.

Wilson entered the contest averaging 0.4 points per contest.  The first time in his career he had played double-digit minutes was on Saturday night against Winston-Salem State.  But in his first career start at DSU he led all scorers with 19 points on 7-11 shooting, including 3 three pointers that got the Hornet crowd up and out of their seats.

"Coach told me to look for my shot if it was there." said Wilson, who set a career high in every measurable statistical category.  "I was lucky to feed off the momentum of my teammates.  The coaches have said just wait for your opportunity, so I tried to do that today."

The sophomore transfer Baylor picked up 11 in his first game in red and blue, including a perfect 3-3 from three-point range.  His layup with 13:50 to go cut the Hornet deficit to one, which he followed with back-to-back three-pointers that give the home team their first lead since the opening minutes at 41-38.  From there the Hornets wouldn't trail again, leading by as much as 14 with just over a minute remaining.

Aggies Lose on Last-Second Shot

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - C.J. Reed hit a runner just outside the lane over Dwane Joshua with four seconds remaining to give Bethune-Cookman a 66-65 win Monday night at Moore Gymnasium.

Joshua led the Aggies with 15 points. Senior guard Tavarus Alston finished 13, and junior center Thomas Coleman had 10 points, six rebounds and five blocks.

Just seconds earlier it appeared Joshua would be the hero. After two missed threes and two offensive rebounds by the Aggies, sophomore guard Nic Simpson drove the ball into the lane and dished it out to a wide open Joshua in the corner for a 3-pointer that gave the Aggies a 65-64 lead with 28.8 seconds remaining.

The Wildcats called timeout after Joshua's three so Cliff Reed could call a play for center Albert Abrahams. Abrahams had given the Aggies problems all night. He finished with 19 points on 9-for-10 shooting. But Reed said when he saw the Aggies were not going to double his son C.J.; he scrapped his previous plans and told C.J. Reed to penetrate to the basket.

Backcourt Sparks Strong 2nd Half as Spartans Snap Skid

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Michael Deloach  scored a game-high 25 points and fellow guard Aleek Pauline added a season-high 14 to help Norfolk State snap its school-record 11-game losing streak with a 78-65 win over Florida A&M on Monday night at the Alfred Lawson Center.

Deloach scored 14 points in the second half and Pauline had 11 of his 14 after halftime as the Spartans (2-12, 1-2 MEAC) outscored the Rattlers (3-12, 1-2) 49-36. The two guards combined to shoot 25 free throws on the night, making 17, to give NSU its first win since a 72-71 decision over Maine on Nov. 16.

The win also snapped the Spartans' 11-game road losing streak but was their fifth win in a row over FAMU. NSU's last victory away from Echols Hall was a 68-62 triumph at Hampton on Jan. 31, 2009.

Unlike Saturday, when they scored just six points in the first 13 minutes and trailed by 23 in the first half at Bethune-Cookman, the Spartans got off to a strong start on Monday. Deloach and forward  Tim Zephyr both scored two early buckets before FAMU found the net to get NSU off to an early eight-point lead.

Collins, Thompson Combine to Lead Howard to Win Over Coppin State

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Dadrian Collins and Calvin Thompson combined to score 13 of the last 16 points down the stretch to help Howard University pull away to a 59-53 win over Coppin State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium.

First Collins, a 6-5 freshman forward from Williamsburg, Va., scored on a three pointer to give the Bison (3-14 overall, 2-1 in the MEAC) a 46-42 lead.  After a five-minute scoring drought between both teams, Sam Coleman got Coppin State to within 46-44 at the 6:39 mark.  Mike Phillips hit one of two from the free throw line for Howard and Collins and Thompson then collaborated for the next nine points to give Howard a 57-51 advantage with just 12 seconds remaining.

While Thompson's scoring was a factor, it was his rebounding and ability to set up teammates that proved to be even more important.  The 6-3 sophomore guard from New Orleans, La., grabbed a game- and career-high 12 rebounds to go along with three assists.
