Solid Start Leads Wildcats to 77-61 win over the Spartans

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - C.J. Reed's 16 points led the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, and a slow start put Norfolk State in a big early hole it could not escape in a 77-61 loss on Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.

The loss was the school-record 11th in a row for the Spartans (1-12, 0-2 MEAC), who were led by 17 points from guard Michael Deloach.

Jarrell Thomas had 13 points, Alexander Starling 12 and Kevin Dukes 11 for the Wildcats (9-6, 2-0), who shot 55.6 percent from the floor while holding NSU to 43.1 percent.

The Spartans never led and were tied just once, at 2-2. BCU pulled ahead for good with six straight points and maintained a 12-6 lead after a layup by NSU guard Aleek Pauline with 13:33 remaining in the half. But the Wildcats went on a 17-0 run and held the Spartans without a field goal for the next six and a half minutes. A Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys  layup ended the run and got NSU within 29-8 with 7:03 left in the period, but the damage had been done.

The Wildcats led by as many as 24 points in the first half, on three different occasions. NSU faced a 39-20 halftime deficit after shooting just 9-of-23 (39 percent) in the opening stanza.

Rattlers Earn First Conference Victory over Aggies

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The North Carolina A&T men's basketball team had plenty of chances to steal a road win from Florida A&M Saturday night. But those opportunities were usually met with missed free throws, missed layups or turnovers.

Allowing too many opportunities to slip by eventually cost the Aggies in a 70-66 loss to the Rattlers at the Al Lawson Center.

Junior center Thomas Coleman led the Aggies with 19 points and 11 rebounds as he recorded his fifth double-double of the season. Senior guard Tavarus Alston added 14 points and three steals for N.C. A&T.

The Rattlers were able to take their biggest lead of the ball game on a Brandon Bryant 3-pointer that gave Florida A&M a 42-31 lead with a little more than 13 minutes remaining. Behind six points from Coleman, the Aggies went 14-4 run over the next four minutes to cut the Rattlers lead to one at 46-45.

Florida A&M guard David Buchannon quickly answered with a short jump shot and a 3-point play by Yannick Crowder pushed the lead out to six with eight minutes to play. Over the next five minutes the Aggies repeatedly cut Florida A&M's lead from five to three or from four to two.

Hornets Come Back To Win Thriller

DOVER, Del. - A dramatic layup from freshman guard Alibaba Odd layup with 0.9 seconds to go for his only basket of the night was the game winner as the Delaware State Hornets beat the Winston-Salem State Rams 49-48 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall on the campus of Delaware State.

With starting forward leading rebounder, and second leading scorer Frisco Sandidge sidelined by injury, the Hornets (5-7, 0-1 MEAC) needed other players to step up, and got standout performances and career highs at multiple positions.  Senior guard Marcus Neal had a career high 20 points, including 6-13 from 3 point range, and freshman Terron Stowe picked up career highs with 12 points, 10 rebounds for the first double-double by a Hornet that wasn't Sandidge this season.

The first half saw the Rams (3-9) jump out early behind the play of guard Brian Fisher, who had nine points on 3-5 shooting in the opening stanza.  The Rams were more efficient on the glass and from the floor, outrebounding DSU 18-12 and shooting 11 of 22 from the floor to just 7 of 23 for the Hornets.  The 27-18 advantage for the Rams made it seem like the absence of Sandidge might be too much for the Hornets to overcome.
