Behind a match-high 15 kills from tournament MVP Christine Edwards and Maryland Eastern Shore rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to defeat Wofford, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-18), and win the Runnin' Bulldog Classic at Paul Porter Arena Saturday.
Edwards, a sophomore outside hitter, was also named to the all-tournament team with fellow outside senior Caylin Woodward. Woodward tallied nine kills and a .533 (9-1-15) attack percentage in the final match of the weekend to go along with seven digs.
Senior Whitney Johnson hit .650 for the match with 14 kills and one error. Sophomore Rebecca Prado led all players with 11 digs.
The Hawks dropped a five-set match to host Gardner-Webb to start the day but closed with a strong showing to improve to 5-3 heading into the Delaware State Invitational Sept. 11-12 in Dover, Del.
UMES hit .385 for the match with 10 errors, including just one in the second game and dispatched the Terriers (1-2) in 68 minutes.
Tied at 13-all in the first game, the Hawks took control with a 12-3 run to close go up, 1-0. UMES got offensive contributions from six different players during the stretch with a kill and ace from Edwards, a pair of aces by sophomore Zoe Bowens and an ace from freshman Karin Vikterlof. Kills also came from Johnson, Samantha Chukwura and Thonya Joseph.
The Hawks never trailed in the second game and scored 11 of the first 16 points. Another Edwards ace gave UMES an 11-5 advantage. The lead grew to 20-7 with a Johnson kill from off of a Bella Jade Romero assist. Romero tallied a match-best 37 assists.
A Rachel Woodlee service error gave the Hawks the set.
UMES found itself trailing 6-4 earlier in the third game, but quickly regained the upper hand with kills by Edwards and Chukwura and two errors by Wofford's Shanna Hughes for an 8-6 lead.
At 13-8, Johnson added another kill to give the Hawks a six-point margin. Edwards gave UMES its biggest lead 22-14 with a kill, before Bowens finished off the match with her match-high third ace.
Wofford was led by Hughes with nine kills and Sarah Palmer with nine digs. The Terriers hit .202 for the match.
