Morgan State began its 2009 home slate with an impressive 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) non-conference win over visiting Lehigh on Wednesday afternoon at Hill Field House.
Erin Cox led the Lady Bears, while tying a match-high 10 kills and Ivanti Bush added eight kills to help the Lady Bears improve to 2-3 all-time against the Mountain Hawks.
Morgan State (2-3), also received 30 assists from Christa Rogers and 24 digs from Dina Beamon. Dominique Bozier and Bush each finished with two blocks apiece to help the Lady Bears out block Lehigh, 4-0.
Morgan State finished the match with 34 kills and a team hitting percentage of .255, while the Mountain Hawks totaled 37 kills for a hitting percentage of .170.
Heading into the Lehigh match, Morgan State very well could have been 3-1, if not 4-0 after last week's NC State Hilton RTP Classic. Some of the things that plagued the Lady Bears were the inability to battle back from large deficits, as well as maintaining serve during rallies and cutting down on service errors.
During Tuesday's practice head coach Ramona Riley-Bozier put the team in various game situations where the starting unit had to overcome certain deficits, stage off set and match-points and work on holding serve.
That hard work proved beneficial, especially in the third set when the Lady Bears fell behind 21-13, following a kill by McReynolds. Morgan State would counter with an 11-0 run, including 10 straight on the serve of Cox.
The run started with back-to-back kills by Cox, followed by a service ace, cutting the Mountain Hawks' lead to 21-16 and forced Lehigh to call a timeout. Bush and Bozier would team up for a block assist and Bush then added a kill to tie the set at 21 all.
An attack error by Lehigh's Chelsea Sheridan gave Morgan State its first lead since 2-1 and Cox then recorded back-to-back service aces, giving the hosts a 24-21 advantage. The run would end on Cox's next serve, which sailed out the court.
Lehigh, which fell to 1-4 overall, was led by Mo McReynolds, who finished with 10 kills and Sheridan added eight kills. Emma Melendez totaled 14 digs, while Brittany Dickinson and Jessica Kudirka added 13 and 12 assists, respectively.
Morgan State, which last held a two-match winning streak during the
2007 season (Nov. 3-6), will look to extend its winning ways when it faces Loyola on Friday, Sept. 4 at noon in the first match of the Battle of Baltimore hosted by the Naval Academy. The Lady Bears will conclude first day action with a 3 p.m. match against host Navy.
The Battle of Baltimore will shift to Towson on Saturday, with the Lady Bears squaring off against the host Tigers at 10:30 a.m., before taking on Maryland at 3 p.m.
