B-CU Sweeps Savannah State, 3-0

The Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman rolled past Savannah State, 3-0, and completed the 2009 sweep of the Lady Tigers. A varied attack and improved defense led the Lady Wildcats to the win, by scores of 30-28, 25-23, and 25-19.

Following a tough road loss the previous night, the Lady Wildcats returned to action on Saturday afternoon at SSU. B-CU got off to a slow start in the first frame, falling behind early to the Lady Tigers, down 6-2 before rallying up. B-CU clawed their way back into the set, knotting up the score at 11-11. They held the lead for the majority of the set, with SSU matching them score for score, eventually reclaiming a lead outside of regulation play, at 28-27. The Lady Wildcats buckled down, putting away three straight points to claim victory 30-28.

A slow start plagued B-CU again in the second set, falling behind 9-5 before setting off on a run which brought it close. The Lady Wildcats remained focused, despite playing from behind, claiming their first lead late in the set, at 22-21. Once on top, B-CU never looked back, topping SSU 25-23 in the second.

The third set got off to a much better start, with the teams matching scores until mid-set. The set featured nine tied scores, and five lead changes, but the Lady Wildcats took command, breaking the stalemate with a 7-2 scoring run. After gaining a commanding advantage in the final frame, B-CU kept SSU at a safe distance, going on to win 25-19.

Co-leaders this afternoon for the Lady Wildcats on offense, Jessica Wilson (hitting .323 and with 7 digs) and Chelle Ticeson (.308) each finished with 13 kills apiece. Ticeson finished with five total blocks against the Lady Tigers. Setting up for the B-CU attack, Daryl Rodriguez finished with a career-best 38 assists, while also collecting four digs and two  kills. Solid defense helped to solidify the victory, led by Shanicka Reddick with 11 digs, followed by Shakhea Moore-Hagins with 10 digs.

The Lady Wildcats (4-9) return to the court on Tuesday, Sept 29, as they travel to DeLand to face 0-13 Stetson, looking to earn back-to-back victories for the second time this season.
