Bethune-Cookman Falls to Gardner-Webb In Three Sets

Bethune-Cookman volleyball got off to a rough start on their weekend road trip, falling in three sets to the Lady Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb.

B-CU faltered in both facets of the game, allowing Gardner-Webb to collect commanding leads in each set, ultimately leading to each loss. Gardner-WebbU downed B-CU 3-0, in sets of 25-15, 25-21, and 25-14.

In the first set, the Lady Wildcats kept it close early, with five tied scores and four lead changes. However, Gardner-Webb broke the stalemate at 5-5, making a 5-1 run and taking charge of the set. The Lady Wildcats brought it close again, at 13-11, before the Lady Bulldogs pushed through, with unforced errors accounting for six of the eleven remaining points. Gardner-Webb took the set 25-14.

The Lady Wildcats came around offensively in the second set, but an early deficit left B-CU needing a comeback, which they produced mid-set, tying it up at 10-10. Following four more ties, Gardner-Webb pushed in front. Though the Lady Wildcats kept it close, the Lady Bulldogs claimed victory 25-21.

In the third, B-CU fell to the offensive attack of Gardner-Webb, with 20 of the set's points coming from kills for the Lady Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb jumped out to a big lead early in the set, on the heels of a 12-1 scoring run, from which Bethune-Cookman could not recover. The Lady Bulldogs finished the set, winning 25-14.

Leading offensively for B-CU, Chelle Ticeson finished with seven kills (.412); followed by Krysta Gardner with five kills (.308). Topping the Lady Wildcats defensively, Shakhea Moore-Hagins collected seven digs, followed by Jacqueline Woodyear with six digs. Daryl Rodriguez had 20 assists on the match.

The Lady Wildcats (3-9) are not done for the weekend, continuing their road trip to Georgia, for a rematch with Savannah State. B-CU defeated SSU in three sets just over a week ago at Moore Gym. B-CU faces off with the Lady Tigers, Saturday (Sept. 26) at 3 p.m.
