Winston-Salem State Loses Tough Set to VCU

Winston-Salem State (1-15) struggled to get things going in a tough three-set loss to the Virginia Commonwealth Rams (10-5), Wednesday afternoon. The WSSU Lady Rams struggled to get out of their own way in the match with 16 errors and only 14 kills while allowing 38 kills to the visiting VCU Rams.

After some strong performances over the weekend, the Lady Rams ran into brick wall against a tough Virginia Commonwealth team that totaled 39 digs in the match. The effort made kills scarce for the Lady Rams as the team fell to VCU 11-25, 14-25, and 14-25.

WSSU junior Ashley Harris led the Lady Rams' attack with six kills while senior Annika Barnwell added five kills. Junior Lakeisha Hawes led the WSSU defensive effort with eight digs, while fellow junior Erica Cole added seven digs as well. Senior blocker Georgette Allen was also solid with two solo blocks and a block assist.

The Lady Rams won't have long to rest, however, as the team will take part in the 2009 North Carolina Central Invitational Tournament this weekend, beginning on Friday.
