Annika Barnwell led the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State to their first victory of the 2009 season on Saturday morning at the C.E. Gaines Center as her match-high 16 kills propelled WSSU to a 3-0 (25-17, 30-28, 25-21) win over Savannah State in second-day action from the 2009 Lady Rams Volleyball Invitational.
The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match as WSSU earned an easy 25-17 win in the first set of the match. WSSU forced the Tigers into 10 attacking errors in the frame as the home team jumped out to a lead that they would never relinquish.
WSSU would follow it up with their most impressive set of the year as they turned in 17 kills in the second frame and committed only nine attack errors as they earned a 30-28 win to jump ahead 2-0.
Capping the match with 13 kills the Lady Rams completed the sweep as they secured their first win of the season with a 25-21 victory in the third and final set.
Barnwell led all players with 16 kills in the win and Ashley Harris chipped in eight kills in the contest. Alexandria Brown led all players with a match-high 30 assists in the victory.
The win improves the Lady Rams to 1-8 on the season. WSSU returns to action at 4:00 p.m. as they face UNC-Asheville in their final action of the weekend.
