UMES' Perez Wins Gold At Colombian Nationals

University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) has been well represented on the international bowling scene this off-season.  One case in particular is that of Martha Perez who won the gold medal in the All Events category of the Colombian Nationals earlier this summer.

Perez, who is an incoming junior, showed flashes of brilliance last season, earning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outstanding Performer honors at the conference tournament while averaging a 188 and rolling a high game of a 253 on the season.  Her star shined brighter than ever on her home turf of Colombia.  She posted a high game of a 298, took a bronze medal in trio bowling, a silver in doubles and a gold in team play.

Those three events combined to give Perez the highest overall total in the field awarding her the gold medal in All Events.  She averaged a 200 to take the title.

After the top finishers were determined the format dictated that the top eight bowl in a singles format.  Perez made it all the way to the semi-finals before Rocio Restrepo of Wichita State defeated her.  Perez took the bronze for the Masters Final.

"It was awesome," said Perez via e-mail.  "I had a great outing bowling and a great outing from the experience.  I think this off season has helped prepare me to come back to UMES and hopefully win another National Championship."

The Lady Hawks' season begins October 30 at the FDU Fright Knight Invite.
