Redshirt junior Samantha Chukwura recorded a team-high six kills but Maryland Eastern Shore fell, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18), to Ohio State in the first match on day two of the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary at Kaplan Arena Saturday.
The loss is the Hawks' (1-2) second consecutive after dropping the nightcap Friday to William & Mary, 3-1. UMES will look to rebound at 5 p.m. when they face Rider. Ohio State improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.
Freshman Karin Vikterlof led all Hawks with nine digs and tied for the team lead with sophomore Zoe Bowens with two service aces. Rookie Bella Jade Romero chipped in with 17 assists and five digs, while senior Caylin Woodward had eight digs.
Ohio State's Katie Dull had a double-double of match-high 13 kills and 10 digs for the Buckeyes. Amanda Peterson collected 25 assists and Emily Danks had four aces.
UMES won the first two points of the match on a Romero ace and a Danks error, but three straight aces from Danks later gave OSU a quick 5-3 advantage.
Tied 7-7 Ohio State tallied five of the next six points to lead, 12-8, before a Chukwura kill stopped the run. OSU had its biggest lead of the game on a Christine Edwards service error at 23-15 and Dull finished it off with a kill to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks took the lead in the second game, 3-2, but it was short-lived as the Buckeyes took the next four points on three kills and a UMES service error. The game was once again tied at seven on a Chukwura kill prior to two kills and an ace from OSU made it 10-7.
The Hawks called a timeout down 14-9 but Ohio State continued to lead the way with five-of-seven points for a 19-11 bulge. UMES scored two unanswered points on a Woodward kill and OSU error, but that was as close as they got the rest of the game.
Bowens opened the third game with an ace and UMES led, 2-1, on a service error by Ohio State's Kelli Barhorst but that was the final the Hawks had. The game was knotted once more at six on an error from Dull before OSU pulled away for the eventual 10-point win to close the match.
The Buckeyes outhit the Hawks, .395-.034, for the match and outblocked them 5.0-2.0.
