Norfolk State opened the season with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 25-16, 25-13) loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Texas at El Paso Sun Bowl Invitational on Friday night.
The Spartans (0-1) took the first set, but dropped the final three to give the Islanders (1-0) their first win of the season.
Sophomore Breanna Allums led the Spartans with a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Nicole Kessner had a team-high 26 assists, and added nine digs while hitting .333.
For the Islanders, Emma Ridley had a match-high 16 kills.
NSU takes on Texas Southern at noon and host UTEP on 9 p.m. on Saturday.
